Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Marchwell', 'CDC Verona' and 'Strongfield'

Summary: The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile of 'CDC Alloy' is weak whereas it is absent or very weak for 'CDC Verona' and 'Strongfield'. The spike of 'CDC Alloy' is shorter than that of all of the reference varieties. The shape of the shoulder of the lower glume of 'CDC Alloy' is slightly sloping to straight whereas it is elevated to strongly elevated with second point present for 'AAC Marchwell' and strongly elevated with second point present for 'CDC Verona'. The shape of the beak of the lower glume of 'CDC Alloy' is moderately curved whereas it is slightly curved for 'AAC Marchwell'.

Description:

PLANT: spring type, erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, heads emerge early to mid-season

SEEDLING: weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous lower leaf sheaths and blades

FLAG LEAF: absent or very low frequency of plants with recurved/drooping flag leaves, weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium glaucosity of sheath, glaucosity absent on lower side of leaf blade, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM NECK: weak to medium glaucosity, very weak curvature
STRAW: thin pith in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration at maturity, yellow

SPIKE: absent or very weak glaucosity, parallel sided shape in profile, dense, white at maturity, erect to inclined attitude, medium hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: longer than length of spike, white, weak to medium degree of spreading
LOWER GLUME: medium length and width, very sparse pubescence, sparse extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: medium width, slightly sloping to straight
LOWER GLUME BEAK: short to medium length, moderately curved
LOWEST LEMMA: slightly curved beak shape

KERNEL: amber, large, medium to long, medium width, elliptical shape, slightly angular to angular cheek, very short brush hairs, mid-wide crease, mid-deep to deep crease

DISEASE REACTIONS: resistant to Common Bunt (Tilletia tritici and Tilletia laevis), Leaf Rust (Puccinia triticina) and Stripe Rust (Puccinia striiformis); resistant to moderately resistant to Loose Smut (Ustilago tritici) and Stem Rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici); moderately susceptible to Fusarium Head Blight (Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium species)

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Alloy' (experimental designations 'DT579' and 'D06X.29.107') is the result of the cross 'Strongfield' / 'Brigade' made in the summer of 2006 at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan. The F1 was increased at a contra-season in New Zealand and the F2 was planted in Saskatoon. In 2007, over 300 single F2 spikes were selected and advanced for two generations using single seed descent. In 2008, F4:5 rows were planted in Saskatchewan and one line, 'D06X.29.107' was selected for plant height, maturity and straw strength and was grown in un-replicated F6 yield trials in 2009 in Saskatoon. In 2010, the F7 was evaluated for agronomic traits in replicated yield trials at various locations in Saskatchewan and in disease resistance trials in Saskatoon and Carman, Manitoba. In 2011, 'D06X.29.107' was further evaluated in various locations in Saskatchewan and Alberta in the Durum Wheat B-test. It was evaluated as 'DT579' in the Durum Wheat co-operative tests from 2012 to 2014. Selection criteria were yield potential, plant maturity, plant height, disease resistance, grain quality and end use functionality.

Tests & Trials: The comparative tests and trials of 'CDC Alloy' were conducted during the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons at the Crop Science Research Farm, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. A two replicate, RCB design was planted with each replicate consisting of 5 rows. The plot size was 4 square metres with a density of 300 plants per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's T-test.
