Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: '5701PR', '5702PR', 'NRG010' and 'CDC NRG003'

Summary: At booting, the frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves is very low for 'CDC Throttle' whereas it is medium for 'CDC NRG003'. The glaucosity of the flag leaf sheath of 'CDC Throttle' is medium whereas it is very weak for '5702PR' and strong for 'NRG010'. 'CDC Throttle' has a narrower flag leaf than that of 'NRG010'. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the flag leaf auricles of 'CDC Throttle' is absent or very weak whereas it is medium to strong for 'CDC NRG003'. The spikes of 'CDC Throttle' are longer than those of '5701PR' and shorter than those of '5702PR'. The plants of 'CDC Throttle' are taller than those of '5701PR'. The extent of the internal hairs of the lower glume of 'CDC Throttle' is of sparse to medium density whereas it is dense for '5702PR' and 'NRG010'. The kernel colour of 'CDC Throttle' is dark red whereas it is white for 'NRG010', white to light red for 'CDC NRG003' and medium red for '5701PR' and '5702PR'.

Description:

PLANT: common spring type, erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, heads emerge mid-season

SEEDLING: no anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous lower leaf sheaths and blades

FLAG LEAF: very low to low frequency of plants with recurved/drooping flag leaves, absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM NECK: medium glaucosity, medium curvature
STRAW: hollow in cross section, no anthocyanin colouration at maturity
SPIKE: absent to very weak glaucosity, tapering shape, medium density, white at maturity, erect to slightly inclined attitude, sparse to medium hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: shorter than length of spike, white at maturity
LOWER GLUME: short to medium length, medium width, glabrous, sparse to medium extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow, slightly sloping to straight
LOWER GLUME BEAK: medium length, straight to slightly curved
LOWEST LEMMA: straight to slightly curved

KERNEL: dark red colour, large, oval, angular cheek, medium to long brush hairs, medium width and depth of crease
GERM: medium size, oval

DISEASE REACTION: resistant to moderately resistant to Common Bunt (Tilletia laevis, Tilletia tritici), Loose Smut (Ustilago tritici), Leaf Rust (Puccinia triticina) and Stem Rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici); moderately resistant to moderately susceptible to Fusarium Head Blight (Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium species)

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Throttle' (experimental designations 'HY03.06.058' and 'GP131') was derived from the cross '5701PR' / HY644 // HY972 made in the summer of 2003 at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan. The F1 generation was increased at a contra-season nursery near Christchurch, New Zealand. In 2004, desirable F2 plants were selected and harvested individually from the F2 generation grown in bulk plots in a Fusarium head blight nursery in Carmen, Manitoba. In 2005 and 2006, the F3 and F4 generations were grown in head rows in a leaf and stem rust nursery in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Selection among the F4:5 head rows was completed for rust resistance, height and maturity in 2007. Five randomly selected spikes were harvested individually to establish F5:6 head rows in 2008. In 2009, 'HY03.06.058' was grown in un-replicated yield trials at the Kernen Crop Research Farm near Saskatoon. 'HY03.06.058' was evaluated for agronomic traits in replicated preliminary yield trials in 2010 and in advanced yield trials in 2011 at various locations in Saskatchewan. In both years, disease resistance trials were also conducted in Saskatoon and Carman, Manitoba. 'HY03.06.058' was further evaluated as 'GP131' in the General Purpose Wheat co-operative tests from 2012 to 2014.

Tests & Trials: The comparative tests and trials of 'CDC Throttle' were conducted during the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons at the Crop Science Research Farm, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. A two replicate, RCB design was planted with each replicate consisting of 5 rows with an inter-row spacing of 20 centimetres. The plot size was 4 square metres with a density of 300 plants per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
