Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Carberry', 'AAC Redberry' and 'Stettler'

Summary: At booting, the frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves is medium for 'AAC Tisdale' whereas the plants of 'AAC Redberry' have a low frequency of recurved flag leaves. The flag leaf of 'AAC Tisdale' is wider than that of 'Carberry' and narrower than that of 'Stettler'. At heading, the spike glaucosity of 'AAC Tisdale' is medium whereas it is strong for 'Stettler'. At maturity, the plants of 'AAC Tisdale' are taller than those of 'Carberry'. At the tip of the spike, the awns of 'AAC Tisdale' are shorter than those of 'Stettler'. The lower glume of 'AAC Tisdale' is shorter than those of the reference varieties.

Description:

PLANT: common hard red spring type, intermediate growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, medium frequency of plants with recurved/drooping flag leaves, heads emerge early to mid-season

SEEDLING (4 LEAF STAGE): absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous lower leaf sheaths and blades

FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM NECK: medium glaucosity, straight
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin pith in cross-section

SPIKE: medium glaucosity at heading, parallel sided shape in profile, lax to medium density, white at maturity, medium length, erect attitude
AWNS: shorter than spike, white at maturity
LOWER GLUME: medium length and width
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: straight, narrow to broad
LOWER GLUME BEAK: long, slightly curved

KERNEL: dark red

Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Tisdale' (experimental designation 'PT250') originated from the cross 'Somerset'/'BW865'//'Waskada' made at the Swift Current Research and Development Centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Swift Current, Saskatchewan in 2006. About 10,000 F2 seeds were inoculated with common bunt and planted in a rust epiphytotic nursery. Approximately 287 early maturing plants were selected based on minimal disease, semi-dwarf stature, strong straw and kernel characteristics. In a contra season nursery near Lincoln, New Zealand, 244 F3 lines were grown and 103 lines were selected based on maturity, plant height, and straw strength. The F4, F6 and F8 generations were planted in various locations in Saskatchewan and Manitoba (near Swift Current, Indian Head, Regina and Morden), assessed for grain yield and plants were selected based on their response to leaf and stem rust in an epiphytotic nursery near Glenlea, Manitoba. The F5 and F7 generations were grown near Irwell, New Zealand. In the F8 generation, response to fusarium head blight was assessed near Carman, Manitoba. Selected lines were screened for resistance to mixtures of races of loose smut and common bunt. B0608-ER04B was evaluated in the Western Bread Wheat A_2 test in 2011, the Western Bread Wheat 'B' test in 2012 and as 'PT250' in the Parkland Cooperative test from 2013 to 2015.

Tests & Trials: The comparative tests and trials for 'AAC Tisdale' were conducted at the Semi-arid Prairie Agricultural Research Centre, Swift Current, Saskatchewan during the 2015 and 2016 growing seasons. Plots of 4.6 metres squared consisted of 4 rows, each 4 metres long, with an inter-row spacing of 23 cm with 4 replications per variety arranged in an RCB Design. The planting density was 220 plants per metre squared, with 3200 plants per variety grown per year. There were 20 measurements taken. Plant heights were recorded as an average of the 4 replicated plots with 16 measurements taken in 2015 and 20 measurements taken in 2016. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on LSD values.
