Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Dakosta', 'AAC Scotia' and 'Touran'
Summary: The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile for 'AAC Synox' is absent or very weak while it is medium to strong for 'Dakosta'. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the flag leaf auricle for 'AAC Synox' is medium to strong while it is absent to weak in 'AAC Scotia', 'Dakosta', and 'Touran'. The flag leaf of 'AAC Synox' is shorter than that of 'AAC Scotia'. The plants of 'AAC Synox' are earlier heading than the plants of 'AAC Scotia'. Excluding the awns, the spike of 'AAC Synox' is longer than the spike of 'Touran'. The lower glume beak length is medium to long for 'AAC Synox' while it is short to medium for 'AAC Scotia'.
Description:
PLANT: hard red, spring-type, semi-erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, heads mid-season, matures mid-season
SEEDLING (4-leaf stage): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of the lower leaves
FLAG LEAF: medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the auricles, medium glaucosity of the sheath, glabrous blade and sheath
CULM: straight neck
STRAW (AT MATURITY): very thin pith in cross section
SPIKE: weak to medium glaucosity at heading, tapering to semi-clavate shape in profile, medium density, white at maturity, sparse to medium hairiness of the convex surface of the apical rachis segment
AWNS: same length as spike
LOWER GLUME: pubescent
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: medium width, straight
LOWER GLUME BEAK: medium to long, slight to moderately curved
KERNEL: dark red, elliptical, short brush hairs
Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Synox' (experimental designations 'BS10-104', 'GU436.1', '07-GU-436' and '06-OA-539') originated from the cross QG22.24/Alsen // Blomidon/Alsen, conducted in 2002 at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Quebec Research and Development Centre in Quebec City, Quebec. One plant was selected from the F1 generation based on disease resistance. The F2 plants were propagated in the greenhouse and F3 evaluated in the field. Plants were selected from the F3 to the F7 generations based on disease resistance. From the F8 generation, the line was further developed by a pedigreed breeding program at Céréla Inc., St-Hugues, Quebec with selections based on high yield and standability. Between 2013 and 2015, 'AAC Synox' was further evaluated in the Quebec Fieldcrop Network comparative trials.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'AAC Synox' were conducted at Céréla Inc., St-Hugues, Quebec, during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons. Plots consisted of 5 rows, each 5 metres long with an inter-row spacing of 19 cm. There were 2 replications per variety arranged in an RCB design. Measured plant characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
