Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Unity', 'Cardale' and 'Carberry'
Summary: The plants of 'CDC Adamant' are shorter than the plants of 'Unity'. The flag leaf of 'CDC Adamant' is longer than the flag leaf of 'Unity'. The flag leaf of 'CDC Adamant' is narrower than those of the reference varieties.
Description:
PLANT: hard red common spring type, erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, medium to high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves
SEEDLING (4 LEAF STAGE): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile, glabrous to slightly pubescent sheath, glabrous leaf blade
FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the auricle, weak to medium glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath
CULM: medium to strong glaucosity, weakly curved neck
STRAW (AT MATURITY): medium thickness to solid pith in cross-section, yellow
SPIKE: absent or very weak glaucosity at heading, tapering in profile, medium density, white to yellow at maturity, erect attitude, sparse to medium hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: white, shorter than spike
LOWER GLUME: medium to long, medium width, glabrous to slightly pubescent, sparse to medium extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: medium width, straight to strongly elevated with second point present
LOWER GLUME BEAK: slightly to moderately curved, medium to long
LOWEST LEMMA: straight to slightly curved beak
KERNEL: medium red, medium to large, medium to long, medium width, oval to ovate shape, rounded to slightly angular cheek shape, midlong brush hairs, medium width and depth of crease
GERM: medium size, oval to broad elliptical shape
DISEASE REACTIONS: resistant to Stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici), moderately resistant to moderately susceptible to Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum) and Leaf rust (Puccina recondita), moderately susceptible to Stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis), susceptible to Common bunt (Tilletia caries, Tilletia) and Loose smut (Ustilago tritici)
Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Adamant' (experimental designation 'W10083') is the result of a cross between 'Unity' and proprietary line 'W04166' made in the winter of 2006 at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan. The F1 seed was grown in the field during the summer of 2006. In the winter of 2006-2007, the F2 seed was grown as a bulk in New Zealand. In 2007, the F3 seed was grown in a bulk nursery in Saskatoon. In the winter of 2007-2008, the F4 and F5 seed was advanced via single seed descent in a greenhouse at Saskatoon. In the summer of 2008, F6 hills were selected for rust resistance, plant type, and straw strength. In the summer of 2009, the seed from a bulked F6 hill was entered into an unreplicated yield trial nursery and selected for yield, height, and straw strength. In the summer of 2010, 'CDC Adamant' was evaluated as 'W10083' in a replicated yield test. From 2011 to 2014, 'W10083' was evaluated for yield.
Tests & Trials: The comparative tests and trials of 'CDC Adamant' were conducted during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. A four replicate, randomized complete block design was planted with each replicate consisting of 5 rows. The plot size was 4.5 square metres with a density of 1400 plants per plot. Measured characteristics are based on 20 measurements per variety. Mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
