Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Marchwell', 'CDC Carbide', 'Strongfield' and 'AAC Durafield'

Summary: At booting, 'AAC Succeed' has a low to medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves while 'Strongfield' has a high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves. The flag leaf of 'AAC Succeed' is narrower than that of 'Strongfield' and 'AAC Marchwell'. At maturity, the plants of 'AAC Succeed' are taller than those of 'Strongfield' and 'AAC Durafield'. The spike of 'AAC Succeed' has a medium degree of glaucosity while the spike of 'Strongfield' has a strong degree of glaucosity. The spike of 'AAC Succeed' is shorter than that of 'AAC Marchwell', 'Strongfield' and 'AAC Durafield'. The lower glume for 'AAC Succeed' is longer than that of 'AAC Marchwell', 'CDC Carbide' and 'AAC Durafield'. The 1000 kernel weight is greater for 'AAC Succeed' than for 'AAC Marchwell' and 'CDC Carbide'.

Description:

PLANT: durum wheat, spring type, semi-erect to intermediate growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, low to medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, heads emerge mid-season

SEEDLING (4-leaf stage): very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of ower leaves

FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM: medium to strong glaucosity, curved neck
STRAW: thin pith in cross section, no anthocyanin colouration at maturity

SPIKE: medium degree of glaucosity at heading, parallel sided shape, dense, off-white at maturity, erect attitude
AWNS: longer than length of spike, white at maturity
LOWER GLUME: long, medium width, glabrous
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: very narrow to narrow, sloping to strongly elevated shape
LOWER GLUME BEAK: short, straight to slightly curved shape
LOWEST LEMMA: straight to moderately curved beak

KERNEL: amber, large, long, medium width, elliptical, rounded to angular shaped cheek, short brush hairs, narrow to medium crease of medium depth
GERM: large, oval shape

AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: good resistance to shattering, good tolerance to drought

PASTA QUALITY: good

DISEASE REACTIONS: resistant to Leaf rust (Puccinia recondita), Common bunt (Tilletia caries, Tilletia foetida) and Loose smut (Ustilago tritici); moderately resistant to Stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici); moderately resistant to moderately susceptible to Stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis) and moderately susceptible to Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium sp.) and Leaf spot (Pyrenophora tritici-repentis and Mycosphaerella graminicola)

INSECT REACTION: moderately resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge (Sitodiplosis mosellana)

Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Succeed' (experimental name 'A0827-FK04' and 'DT871') was selected from the cross 'DT814' / 'DT794'// DT809' made in 2008 at the Swift-Current Research Centre, Swift Current, Saskatchewan. In 2009, the F1 seeds were increased in the greenhouse and F2 seeds were space planted in a disease epiphytotic field nursery near Swift Current where individual plants were selected for disease resistances, plant height, straw strength and maturity. Seeds of individual spikes were grown in F3 rows near Lincoln, New Zealand in 2009-2010 and selections were made for plant height, maturity and straw strength. In 2010, the F4 lines were grown in plots near Swift Current and Regina, Saskatchewan and were selected by agronomic performance, quality testing and disease reaction. The F5 spikes were grown in rows near Leeston, New Zealand and were selected for plant height, straw strength and maturity. In 2011, the F6 lines were grown in various locations in Saskatchewan and selection was based on agronomic performance, disease resistance and quality characteristics. One line, 'A0827-FK04', was identified as meeting all selection criteria at each stage. In 2012, 'A0827-FK04' was tested in the Durum Central A3 test and in 2013 in the Durum-B test. From 2014 to 2016, 'A0827-FK04' was entered in the Durum Cooperative Test and tested as 'DT871'.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials of 'AAC Succeed' were conducted during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons at the Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada Swift Current Research Development Centre, Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Plots consisted of 4 rows, with a row length of 3 metres and a row spacing of 23 cm. There were 4 replications arranged in an RCB design. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year except for kernel weight, which was based on 1 measurement per plot for each variety in each year. Mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values. Disease ratings were provided through the Disease Evaluation team of the Prairie Recommending Committee for Wheat, Rye and Triticale, Prairie Grain Development Committee.
