Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: '25R40' and '25R47'

Summary: At booting, the frequency of plants with recurved leaves is medium to high for 'XW16G' while it is high to very high for '25R47'. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the auricles for 'XW16G' is weak while it is absent or very weak for '25R40'. The flag leaf for 'XW16G' is shorter than that of '25R47'. At maturity, the plants of 'XW16G' are taller than those of '25R40'. The spike of 'XW16G' is longer than that of '25R40'. The attitude of the spike for 'XW16G' is inclined while it is erect for '25R40'. The kernel brush hair length is medium to long for 'XW16G' while it is short for '25R40'. The kernel colouration in reaction to phenol is dark for 'XW16G' while it is light to medium for '25R40' and medium for '25R47'.

SEEDLING (4 LEAF STAGE): glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM: weak glaucosity, curved neck
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin pith in cross-section

SPIKE: weak degree of glaucosity at heading, tapering shape in profile, medium to dense, white at maturity, erect to inclined attitude
AWNS: shorter than length of spike, light brown at maturity
LOWER GLUME: medium length, medium to wide, glabrous, sparse extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: absent or very narrow to narrow, sloping to slightly sloping shape
LOWER GLUME BEAK: short, slightly curved shape

LOWEST LEMMA: slightly curved beak

KERNEL: soft red type, medium red, medium sized, medium length, medium to wide, oval, rounded cheek, medium to long brush hairs, narrow to medium crease, medium to deep crease, dark colouration in reaction to phenol
GERM: medium sized, broad elliptical

Origin & Breeding History: 'XW16G' originated from a three way controlled cross between proprietary selections from Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc. Using a pedigree method of plant breeding, the final cross was conducted in 2007 in Windfall, Indiana, USA. The F1 was transplanted in a field nursery in Windfall, Indiana. From 2009 to 2015 selections were made at each filial generation based on disease resistance, plant type, plant height, head type, straw strength, maturity, grain yield, test weight along with milling and baking characteristics. In 2016, the F10 was further assessed in elite yield testing and was increased and purified in progeny plots.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'XW16G' was conducted during the 2018 growing season at Pioneer Hi-Bred Production Company in Caledon, Ontario. There were 3 replications arranged in an RCB design. Each plot consisted of 6 rows, with a row length of 6.0 metres and row spacing of 30 cm. Each plot had approximately 2600 plants. Measured characteristics were based on 24 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a Student`s t-test. Results were supported by the official technical examination report, number 201800079, purchased from the Plant Variety Protection Office, Washington, District of Columbia, USA.
