Varieties used for comparison: '25R40' and '25R47'

Summary: At maturity, the plants of '16162679' are taller than those of the reference varieties. The kernel for '16162679' is oval while it is broad elliptical for '25R47'. The kernel colouration in reaction to phenol is very dark for '16162679' while it is light to medium for '25R40' and medium for '25R47'.

Description:

PLANT: common wheat, winter type, semi-erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, high to very high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves

SEEDLING (4 LEAF STAGE): strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium to strong glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM: weak glaucosity, curved neck
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin pith in cross-section

SPIKE: absent or very weak to weak degree of glaucosity at heading, tapering shape in profile, medium to dense, white at maturity, inclined attitude
AWNS: equal to length of spike, light brown at maturity
LOWER GLUME: medium length, medium width, glabrous, sparse extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow to medium width, sloping shape
LOWER GLUME BEAK: short to medium, slightly curved shape
LOWEST LEMMA: slightly curved beak

KERNEL: soft red type, medium red, medium to large sized, medium to long, medium width, oval, rounded cheek, short to medium brush hairs, narrow to medium crease, medium to deep crease, very dark colouration in reaction to phenol
GERM: medium to large, broad elliptical

Origin & Breeding History: '16162679' (experimental designation YW16J) originated from a three way controlled cross between proprietary selections from Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc. Using a pedigree method of plant breeding, the final cross was conducted in 2008 in Windfall, Indiana, USA. The F1 was transplanted in a field nursery in Windfall, Indiana. From 2010 to 2015, selections were made at each filial generation based on disease resistance, plant type, plant height, head type, straw strength, maturity, grain yield, test weight along with milling and baking characteristics. In 2016, the F9 was further assessed in elite yield testing and was headrow purified and bulk increased.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for '16162679' was conducted during the 2018 growing season at Pioneer Hi-Bred Production Company in Caledon, Ontario. There were 3 replications arranged in an RCB design. Each plot consisted of 6 rows, with a row length of 6 metres and row spacing of 30 cm. Each plot had approximately 2600 plants. Measured characteristics were based on 24 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a Student`s t-test. Results were supported by the official technical examination report number 201800081, purchased from the Plant Variety Protection Office, Washington, District of Columbia, USA.
