Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Fairwind' and 'Norwell'

Summary: At the 5 to 9 tiller stage, the plants of 'Raven' have an erect growth habit whereas those of 'AAC Fairwind' have an intermediate growth habit. At booting, the flag leaf of 'Raven' is longer and wider than that of both reference varieties. The plants of 'Raven' head later than the plants of 'Norwell'. The culm neck for 'Raven' has a strong degree of glaucosity whereas that of 'Norwell' has a medium degree of glaucosity. At heading, the plants of 'Raven' are shorter than those of 'AAC Fairwind' and taller than those of 'Norwell'. The spike of 'Raven' is longer than that of both reference varieties. The spike of 'Raven' has an inclined attitude whereas that of 'AAC Fairwind' has an erect attitude. The lower glume shoulder for 'Raven' is narrow and sloping to slightly sloping whereas it is medium in width and elevated for 'Norwell'. The lower glume for 'Raven' is longer than that of 'Norwell'. The lower glume beak is moderately curved for 'Raven' whereas it is slightly curved for 'AAC Fairwind' and straight to slightly curved for 'Norwell'. The thousand kernel weight for 'Raven' is greater than that of 'Norwell'. The kernel shape for 'Raven' is oval whereas it is elliptical for 'AAC Fairwind'.

Description:

PLANT: spring type, common wheat, erect growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, absent or very low frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, heads mid-season, matures mid-season

SEEDLING (4-leaf stage): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium to strong glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM: strong degree of glaucosity, straight neck
STRAW: thin pith in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration at maturity

SPIKE: medium degree of glaucosity, tapering, lax, white at maturity, inclined attitude, sparse hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: shorter than length of spike, white at maturity
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: medium width, sloping to slightly sloping
LOWER GLUME: medium to long, medium to wide, glabrous, sparse extent of internal hair
LOWER GLUME BEAK: medium to long, moderately curved shape

KERNEL: hard red, dark red, medium size, medium length, medium to wide, oval, rounded cheek, short to medium brush hairs, narrow crease with very shallow to shallow depth
GERM: medium size, broad elliptical

BREAD MAKING QUALITY: good

Origin & Breeding History: 'Raven' (experimental designation ACS12638) originated from the cross between 'ACS53604' and 'Casana' made in Oberlimpurg, Germany, in 2004. Pedigree method of selection was conducted from the F2 to F9 generations based on milling and bread making quality, yield, lodging resistance and disease resistance. A single plant selection in the F10 generation, designated as AC12638, was increased and breeder seed bulked at the F12 generation.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials of 'Raven' were conducted during the 2017 and 2018 growing seasons in Palmerston, Ontario. Plots consisted of 8 rows, with a row length of 4 metres and a row spacing of 15 cm. There were 4 replications arranged in an RCB design. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
