Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'McKenzie' and 'Glenn'

Summary: The anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile is absent or very weak for 'SY Gabbro' whereas it is medium to strong for 'McKenzie'. At booting, the frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves is low to medium for 'SY Gabbro' whereas it is medium to high for 'McKenzie'. The flaf leaf of 'SY Gabbro' is longer than that of 'McKenzie' and wider than that of 'Glenn'. The culm glaucosity is strong for 'SY Gabbro' whereas it is weak to medium for 'McKenzie'. At heading, the plants of 'SY Gabbro' are shorter than those of 'McKenzie'. The spike density is lax to medium for 'SY Gabbro' whereas it is medium to dense for 'McKenzie'. The spike of 'SY Gabbro' is longer than that of 'McKenzie'. The culm neck is straight for 'SY Gabbro' whereas it is curved for 'McKenzie'. At maturity, the lower glume shoulder for 'SY Gabbro' is broad and sloping whereas it is narrow to medium in width and elevated for 'Glenn'. The lower glume beak is slightly curved for 'SY Gabbro' whereas it is moderately curved for both reference varieties. The kernel weight for 'SY Gabbro' is greater than that of both reference varieties. The shape of the kernel cheek is rounded for 'SY Gabbro' whereas it is angular for 'Glenn'. The shape of the kernel germ is round for 'SY Gabbro' whereas it is oval to broad elliptical for 'Glenn'. The kernel crease is of medium width for 'SY Gabbro' while it is narrow for 'McKenzie'.

SEEDLING (4-leaf stage): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, absent or very weak to weak glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM: strong glaucosity, straight neck
STRAW: pith of medium thickness in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration at maturity

SPIKE: weak to medium degree of glaucosity, tapering, lax to medium density, light brown at maturity, inclined attitude, absent or very sparse to sparse hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: shorter than length of spike, light brown at maturity
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: broad, sloping
LOWER GLUME: medium length, medium to wide, glabrous, sparse extent of internal hair
LOWER GLUME BEAK: short to medium, slightly curved shape
LOWEST LEMMA: slightly curved beak

KERNEL: hard red, medium to dark red, medium size, short to medium length, medium width, oval, rounded cheek, brush hairs of medium length, deep crease of medium width
GERM: small to medium size, round

AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: good resistance to shattering

BREAD MAKING QUALITY: good

DISEASE REACTIONS: resistant to Leaf rust (Puccinia recondita); resistant to moderately resistant to Stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici); moderately resistant to Fusarium head blight (Fusarium species and specifically Fusarium graminearum); and moderately resistant to moderately susceptible to Common bunt (Tilletia caries, Tilletia foetida) and Stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis)

INSECT REACTIONS: Susceptible to wheat midge (Sitodiplosis mosellana)

Origin & Breeding History: 'SY Gabbro' (experimental designations BW1041 and 10S2098-10) originated from the cross between '05S0333-1' and a progeny resulting from the cross between 'Carberry' and 'Glenn'. The cross was conducted in Berthoud, Colorado, USA in 2010. Individual head selections were made from the F2 population at Syngenta Canada Inc. in Rosebank, Manitoba, in 2011, based on plant height, maturity and disease resistance. Single seed descent technique was used to advance these selections through the F3 and F4 generations in a greenhouse. In 2012, F5 headrows were individually bulked from a nursery at Rosebank, Manitoba and entered into a yield trial in Rosebank Manitoba in 2013. Selections were based on plant height, maturity, disease resistance, protein content and overall worth. One of the selections was designated 10S2098-10 and sent to a winter nursery in New Zealand, for generation advancement, in 2013. The resulting F8 was entered in Syngenta Canada, Inc. multi-location research plots in 2014. In 2014, 100 heads were selected for initial purity from the F9 increase plots, based on yield, test weight, plant height, maturity, disease resistance and baking and milling quality. Of the100 progeny rows planted in Rosebank, Manitoba, in 2015, 24 rows were selected and progeny plots subsequently planted in Berthoud, Colorado. In 2017, 16 plots were selected and bulked for breeder seed. Selection criteria for the progeny rows and plots were based on agronomic traits, disease resistance and quality. The variety was tested as BW1041 in the Central Bread Wheat Co-op during the 2015 to 2017 growing seasons.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'SY Gabbro' were conducted during the 2017 and 2018 growing seasons near Rosebank, Manitoba. Plots consisted of 7 rows, with a row length of 3 metres and a row spacing of 18 cm. There were 3 replications arranged in an RCB design. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year, except 1000 kernel weight, which was based on 10 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. Disease reaction ratings were provided through the Disease Evaluation team of the Prairie Recommending Committee for Wheat, Rye and Triticale and Prairie Grain Development Committee from trials conducted in 2015 to 2017.
