Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Glenn'

Summary: The anthocyanin colouration is of medium intensity on the coleoptile of 'SY Brawn' whereas it is absent or very weak to weak on the coleoptile of 'Glenn'. At booting, the flag leaf of 'SY Brawn' is wider than that of 'Glenn'. At maturity, the thousand kernel weight for 'SY Brawn' is less than that of 'Glenn'. The shape of the kernel of 'SY Brawn' is elliptical whereas it is broad elliptical for 'Glenn'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'SY Brawn' (experimental designations PT652 and CS11200228-7) originated from the cross made in 2011 between the lines, CS11200069 and 06S0448-8 conducted in Berthoud, Colorado, USA. Individual head selections were made from the F2 population at Syngenta Canada Inc. in Rosebank, Manitoba, in 2012, based on height, maturity and disease reaction. Single seed descent technique was used to advance these selections through the F3 and F4 generations in a greenhouse. In 2013, F5 headrows were individually bulked from a nursery and entered into a yield trial in Rosebank Manitoba in 2014. One of the selections was designated as CS11200228-7 and sent to a winter nursery in New Zealand, for generation advancement, in 2014. The resulting F8 was entered in Syngenta Canada, Inc. multi-location research plots in 2015. In 2015, 100 heads were selected for initial purity from the F9 increase plots, based on yield, test weight, height, maturity, disease reaction and comprehensive quality. In 2016, 100 progeny rows were planted in Rosebank, Manitoba and progeny plots subsequently planted in Berthoud, Colorado in 2017. In 2018, 16 plots were selected, based on agronomy, pathology and quality assessment of the 100 progeny rows, and bulked in Eaton, Colorado for breeder seed. The variety was tested as PT652 in the Parkland Bread Wheat Co-op during the 2016 to 2018 growing seasons.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'SY Brawn' were conducted during the 2018 and 2019 growing seasons near Rosebank, Manitoba. Plots consisted of three replications arranged in a RCB design with each plot consisting of 7 rows with a row length of 3 metres and row spacing of 18 cm. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student`s t-test.
