Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Adrianus', 'Gallus' and 'JDC78'
Summary: At booting, 'PRO81' has a medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves whereas the frequency is low for 'Adrianus' and absent or very low for Gallus'. The flag leaf of 'PRO81' is shorter than that of 'Adrianus' and 'JDC78' and narrower than that of 'Gallus'. The culm neck of 'PRO81' has a low degree of glaucosity whereas that of 'Adrianus' and 'Gallus' has a strong degree of glaucosity. The awns at the tip of the spike of 'PRO81' are shorter than the spike whereas the awns are longer than the spike for 'Gallus'. At maturity, the plants of 'PRO81' are taller than the plants of the reference varieties. The attitude of the spike for 'PRO81' is inclined whereas it is erect for 'Adrianus' and 'JDC78'. The culm of 'PRO81' has a straight neck whereas that of 'JDC78' has a curved neck. The lower glume shoulder shape is elevated for 'PRO81' whereas it is straight for 'JDC78', sloping to slightly sloping for 'Adrianus' and slightly sloping for 'Gallus'. 'PRO81' has a lower thousand kernel weight than that of 'Adrianus' and 'Gallus'.
Description:

SEEDLING (4 LEAF STAGE): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves
FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium degree of glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath
CULM: weak degree of glaucosity, straight neck
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin pith in cross section, no anthocyanin colouration
SPIKE: medium to strong degree of glaucosity at heading, tapering shape in profile, medium density, white at maturity, inclined attitude
AWNS: shorter than spike length, white at maturity
LOWER GLUME: medium length and width, glabrous
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow to medium width, elevated shape
LOWER GLUME BEAK: medium to long, slightly curved shape
KERNEL: hard red type, dark red, medium size, medium length and width, broad elliptical to elliptical shape, rounded cheek, long brush hairs, medium width and depth of crease

Origin & Breeding History: 'PRO81' (experimental designations Cambridge, SZD 0896 and CM16-002) originated from the cross between C554-2723 and 'Blasius' conducted in Probstdorf, Austria in 2008. The variety was developed using a modified pedigree selection. Single plant selections were made from the F3 to F7 generations based on milling and bread making quality, yield, lodging resistance and disease resistance. Breeder seed was bulked at the F7 generation from two single plants.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'PRO81' were conducted during the 2018 and 2019 growing seasons in Palmerston, Ontario. Plots consisted of 8 rows, with a row length of 4 metres and row spacing of 15 cm. There were 4 replications arranged in an RCB design. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on LSD values.
