Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Marchwell', 'AAC Cabri', 'CDC Carbide' and 'CDC Desire'

Summary: During anthesis, the flag leaf of 'CDC Vantta' is wider than that of 'CDC Carbide' and 'CDC Desire'. The flag leaf sheath of 'CDC Vantta' has a strong to very strong degree of glaucosity while that of 'CDC Carbide' and 'CDC Desire' have a medium to strong degree of glaucosity. The plants of 'CDC Vantta' head later than those of 'AAC Marchwell', 'CDC Carbide' and 'CDC Desire'. At maturity, the plants, including the spike and awns, of 'CDC Vantta' are shorter than those of the reference varieties. Excluding the awns, the spike of 'CDC Vantta' is shorter than that of 'AAC Cabri'. The awns of 'CDC Vantta' black while those of the reference varieties are white.

Description:

PLANT: durum wheat, spring type, erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, ranging between very low to moderate frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, heads emerge mid-season, matures late-season

SEEDLING (4 LEAF STAGE): absent or very weak to weak anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles during anthesis, strong to very strong glaucosity of sheath, glabrous sheath and blade

CULM: straight to slightly curved neck at maturity
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thick pith in cross-section, absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration

SPIKE: strong glaucosity at heading, parallel sided in profile, dense, yellow at maturity, erect attitude, sparse hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: shorter than spike, black
LOWER GLUME: long, medium width, glabrous external surface, very sparse internal hairiness
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: medium width
LOWER GLUME BEAK: medium length
LOWEST LEMMA: straight beak

KERNEL: hard durum type, purple, large, long, narrow, elliptical, rounded to angular cheek, very short to short brush hairs
KERNEL CREASE: medium to deep
GERM: medium sized, broad elliptical to elliptical

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Vantta' (experimental designations D012.008X.112 and DT1012) resulted from a cross conducted at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan in 2012 between the lines D06.76.042 and D05.15.089. The variety was advanced from the F1 to F6 generation where one line was designated D012.008X.112 in 2015 based on yield and the presence of the allele for reduced lipoxygenase activity and low cadmium acclumulation. The line was then assessed for grain colour, protein concentration, gluten strength and further evaluated in 2016 for yield, agronomic traits and disease reaction for leaf and stripe rust and Fusarium head blight. D012.008X.112 was evaluated in the Durum Western B Test in 2017 and entered as DT1012 in the Durum wheat Registration Test from 2018 to 2020. A set of 245 F9 derived F11 lines were used to establish breeder seed in 2020.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'CDC Vantta' were conducted during the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons at the Crop Development Seed Farm, University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. There were 3 replicates arranged in a RCB design. Each 4.25 metre squared plot consisted of 5 rows, with 20 centimetres inter-row spacing. The planting density ranged from 300 to 320 seeds per square metre to achieve a minimum target density of 1275 plants per variety per year. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year except for plant height which was based on 40 measurements per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
