Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Brandon', 'CDC Abound' and 'CDC Landmark'

Summary: At booting, 'CDC Power CLPlus' has a high to very high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves whereas 'CDC Abound' has an absent or very low to low frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves and 'CDC Landmark' has a medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves. The flag leaf auricles of 'CDC Power CLPlus' have an absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the flag leaf auricles of 'CDC Abound' have a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The flag leaf of 'CDC Power CLPlus' is shorter than that of 'AAC Brandon'. At maturity, the plants, including the spike and awns, of 'CDC Power CLPlus' are shorter than those of the reference varieties. The spike, excluding awns, of 'CDC Power CLPlus' is shorter than that of the reference varieties. In cross-section, the stem of 'CDC Power CLPlus' has a thin pith whereas that of 'CDC Landmark' has a medium to thick pith. The hairiness of the convex surface of the apical rachis segment for 'CDC Power CLPlus' is dense whereas it is absent or very sparse for 'CDC Landmark' and of medium density for 'CDC Abound' and 'AAC Brandon'. The lower glume shoulder of 'CDC Power CLPlus' is slightly sloping to straight whereas it is straight to elevated for 'CDC Landmark'. The thousand kernel weight of 'CDC Power CLPlus' is less than that of 'CDC Abound'.

Description:

PLANT: common wheat, spring type, erect growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, high to very high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, heads emerge early to mid-season

SEEDLING (4 LEAF STAGE): absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, weak glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath.

CULM: very weak curvature of neck at maturity
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin pith in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration

SPIKE: very weak to weak glaucosity at heading, tapering shape in profile, medium density, yellow at maturity, erect attitude, dense hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: shorter than spike, white at maturity
LOWER GLUME: medium length and width, glabrous, medium extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow to medium width, slightly sloping to straight
LOWER GLUME BEAK: long, slightly to moderately curved
LOWEST LEMMA: straight beak

KERNEL: hard red type, medium red, medium size, medium length and width, ovate, rounded cheek, medium length brush hairs
KERNEL CREASE: medium width, medium depth
GERM: medium sized, round to broad elliptical

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Power CLPlus' (experimental designations PT5008 and IR17031) originated from a controlled cross conducted in a greenhouse in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in the fall of 2008 between the lines BW859 and IR07073. From 2009 to 2013, the F1 to F6 generations were bulked and advanced in Saskatoon or in a contra nursery in New Zealand and the F7 generation was planted in a space-planted nursery in Saskatoon. Selections were made from the F8 and F9 hill plots based on plant type, straw strength, and disease reactions in an irrigated nursery inoculated with leaf and stem rust. A bulked F9 hill was used as a seed source for an unreplicated yield test in 2016 where selections were made based on yield, plant height, and straw strength. Replicated yield testing occurred using the designation IR17031 in 2017 and 2018. IR17031 was then advanced and further evaluated at PT5008 in the Parkland Cooperative Test from 2019 to 2021. Breeder seed was established at the F15 generation in 2021.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'CDC Power CLPlus' were conducted at the University of Saskatchewan, Crop Science Field Facility in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons. There were 4 replications per variety arranged in an RCB design. Plots consisted of 5 rows, each row 3.6 metres long with an inter-row spacing of 24 centimetres. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year, except for plant height which was based on 40 measurements per variety per year and the kernel weight which was based on 4 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values.
