Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Precision', 'Strongfield', 'CDC Verona' and 'CDC Credence'

Summary: At booting, 'CDC Evident' has a medium to high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves while 'CDC Precision' and 'Strongfield' have an absent or very low frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves. The flag leaf of 'CDC Evident' is longer than the flag leaf of 'CDC Precision'. At maturity, the plants, including the spike and awns, of 'CDC Evident' are taller than those of 'Strongfield'. Excluding the awns, the spike of 'CDC Evident' is longer than those of 'CDC Precision', 'CDC Verona'and 'CDC Credence'. The awns of 'CDC Evident' are black while those of 'CDC Precision', 'Strongfield' and 'CDC Verona' are white. The external surface of the lower glume of 'CDC Evident' is pubescent while that of the reference varieties is glabrous. The plants of 'CDC Evident' mature earlier than those of 'CDC Verona'.

Description:

PLANT: durum wheat, spring type, erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, medium to high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, heads emerge mid-season, matures late season

SEEDLING (4 LEAF STAGE): absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles during anthesis, medium to strong glaucosity of sheath, glabrous sheath and blade

CULM: slightly curved neck at maturity
STRAW (AT MATURITY): ranging between thin to medium and medium to thick pith in cross-section, absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration

SPIKE: ranging between low to medium and strong glaucosity at heading, parallel sided in profile, dense, yellow at maturity, erect attitude, sparse to medium hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: moderately shorter than spike, black
LOWER GLUME: medium to long, medium width, pubescence present on external surface, very sparse internal hairiness
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow to medium width
LOWER GLUME BEAK: short to medium length
LOWEST LEMMA: straight beak

KERNEL: hard durum type, purple, medium to large, medium to long, medium width, elliptical, angular cheek, very short to short brush hairs
KERNEL CREASE: medium width, medium to deep
GERM: ranging between small to medium and medium sized, broad elliptical to elliptical

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Evident' (experimental designations D13.037.289.005 and DT1020) resulted from a three-way cross conducted at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2013. The initial cross conducted between the lines D06.61.046 and D06.67.192 was followed by a subsequent cross to line DT857. The variety was advanced from the F1 to F6 generation where one line, designated D13.037.289.005, was assessed for yield, grain colour, protein concentration, gluten strength along with reaction to leaf, stem and stripe rust in an inoculated nursery and for resistance to Fusarium head blight at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Carman, Manitoba in 2017. The variety was entered as DT1020 in the Durum wheat Registration Test from 2019 to 2021. A set of 120 F9 derived F11 lines were used to establish breeder seed in 2021.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'CDC Evident' were conducted during the 2021 and 2022 growing seasons at the Crop Development Seed Farm, University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. There were 3 replicates arranged in a RCB design. Each 4.25 metre squared plot consisted of 5 rows, with 20 centimetres inter-row spacing. The planting density ranged from 300 to 320 seeds per square metre to achieve a minimum of 1275 plants per variety per year. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year except for plant height which was based on 40 measurements per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
