Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Alban', 'AAC Maurice' and 'Raven'
Summary: At booting, 'Basile' ranges between a medium to high and high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves while 'Raven' ranges between a low to medium and medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves. The flag leaf sheath of 'Basile' ranges between a medium to strong and strong to very strong degree of glaucosity while that of 'AAC Maurice' ranges between a weak to medium and medium degree of glaucosity. The plants of 'Basile' head later than those of 'AAC Maurice'. At heading, the spike of 'Basile' ranges between a medium and a medium to strong degree of glaucosity whereas the spike of 'AAC Maurice' ranges between a weak and a weak to medium degree of glaucosity. The plants of 'Basile' are taller than those of 'Raven'. The spike, excluding the awns, of 'Basile' is shorter than that of 'Raven'. At maturity, the glume shoulder of 'Basile' is straight while that of 'AAC Maurice' is slightly sloping. The 1000 kernel weight of 'Basile' is greater than those of 'Alban' and 'Raven'.
Description:
PLANT: common wheat, spring type, growth habit ranging between semi-erect and semi-erect to intermediate at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, ranging between medium to high and high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, heads emerge mid-season
FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, ranging between medium to strong and strong to very strong glaucosity of sheath
CULM NECK: straight
STRAW (AT MATURITY): very thin to thin pith in cross-section, anthocyanin colouration absent
SPIKE: ranging between medium and medium to strong glaucosity at heading, tapering shape in profile, lax to medium density, white at maturity, inclined attitude
AWNS: equal to spike length, white at maturity
LOWER GLUME: long, narrow to medium width
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow to medium width, straight
LOWER GLUME BEAK: medium to long
KERNEL: hard red type
Origin & Breeding History: 'Basile' (experimental designation CLB09-142.048) resulted from the cross between the line SB03-137 as the female parent and the variety 'AC Walton' as the male parent, conducted at Céréla inc. in St. Hugues, Quebec in 2009. The variety was advanced from the F1 to F5 generation based on grain density with one F6 line designated as CLB09-142.048. The line was further evaluated from 2015 to 2018 based on seed yield, volumetric weight, thousand kernel weight, and tolerance to fusarium head blight and entered in the registration trials managed by the Quebec Recommending Committee for cereals from 2019 to 2021. Breeder seed was established at the F10 generation in 2019.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Basile' was conducted at the Céréla testing site in St. Hugues, Quebec during the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons. There were 2 replicates arranged in a RCB design. Each plot consisted of 5 rows, each row measuring 4.5 metres long, with an inter-row spacing of 19 cm. The planting density of 425 seeds per square metre resulted in approximately 3825 plants per variety per year. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
