Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Evora', 'Minestro' and 'Raven'
Summary: At booting, the flag leaf auricles of Kerson' have an absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration while the flag leaf auricles of Evora' and Minestro' have a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The flag leaf of Kerson' is narrower than the flag leaf of Evora' and wider than that of Minestro'. The plants of Kerson' head earlier than the plants of Evora' and later than those of Minestro' and Raven'. At heading, the spike of Kerson' has a medium to strong degree of glaucosity while that of Minestro' has a weak to medium degree of glaucosity. At maturity, the plants, including the spike and awns, of Kerson' are shorter than the plants of Evora' and taller than those of Raven'. Excluding the awns, the spike of Kerson' is shorter than those of Evora' and Raven'. The awns of Kerson' are equal to the length of the spike while the awns of Minestro' are longer than the length of the spike. The spike of Kerson' has an inclined attitude while that of Evora' has an erect attitude. The lower glume shoulder shape of Kerson' is straight to elevated while that of Raven' is slightly sloping to straight. The lower glume beak of Kerson' is long to very long while that of Raven' is short to medium in length. The thousand kernel weight of Kerson' is greater than that of the reference varieties.
Description:
PLANT: common wheat, spring type, semi-erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, medium to high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, heads emerge mid-season
SEEDLING (4 LEAF STAGE): glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves
FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium to strong glaucosity of sheath
CULM: straight neck at maturity
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin pith in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration
SPIKE: medium to strong glaucosity at heading, tapering shape in profile, medium density, white at maturity, inclined attitude, very sparse to sparse hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: equal to spike length, white at maturity
LOWER GLUME: long, narrow to medium width, glabrous
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow to medium width, straight to elevated shape
LOWER GLUME BEAK: long to very long, straight to slightly curved
KERNEL: hard red type, medium red
Origin & Breeding History: Kerson' (experimental designation CLB09-024.012) resulted from the cross between the varieties Hoffman' as the female parent and Major' as the male parent, conducted at Céréla inc. in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec in 2009. The variety was advanced from the F1 to F5 generation based on grain density with one F6 line designated as CLB09-024.012. The line was further evaluated from 2015 to 2018 based on seed yield, volumetric weight, thousand kernel weight, and tolerance to Fusarium head blight and entered in the registration trials managed by the Quebec Recommending Committee for cereals from 2019 to 2021. Breeder seed was established at the F10 generation in 2019.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for Kerson' were conducted at the Céréla testing site in St-Hugues, Quebec during the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons. There were 2 replicates arranged in a RCB design. Each plot consisted of 5 rows, each row measuring 4.5 metres long, with an inter-row spacing of 19 centimetres. The planting density of 425 seeds per square metre resulted in approximately 3825 plants per variety per year. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
