Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Awesome', 'AC Andrew' and 'GP193'

Summary: At the 5-9 tiller stage, the plants of 'Alotta' range between an intermediate and intermediate to semi-prostrate growth habit, while the plants of 'AC Andrew' have a semi-erect growth habit. The flag leaf of 'Alotta' is shorter and narrower than those of 'AAC Awesome' and 'GP193'. The plants of 'Alotta' are shorter than the plants of 'AAC Awesome' and 'AC Andrew'. The kernel of 'Alotta' is medium red while those of the reference varieties are white. The 1000 kernel weight of 'Alotta' is greater than those of the reference varieties.

Description:

PLANT: common wheat, spring type, ranging between intermediate and intermediate to semi-prostrate growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, low to medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, heads emerge late in the season

SEEDLING (4-leaf stage): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, strong glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM NECK: strong glaucosity, straight to slightly curved
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin to medium width pith in cross-section, anthocyanin colouration absent

SPIKE: medium to strong glaucosity at heading, parallel sided in profile, dense, white at maturity, erect attitude
AWNS: shorter than spike, white at maturity
LOWER GLUME: medium to long, medium width, glabrous
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: ranging between narrow and narrow to medium width, sloping to slightly sloping
LOWER GLUME BEAK: long, straight to slightly curved
LOWEST LEMMA BEAK: straight

KERNEL: hard red type, medium red, medium to large, medium to long, medium to wide, oval, rounded cheek, medium length brush hairs, narrow to medium width crease, shallow to medium depth crease
GERM: medium size, broad elliptical

Origin & Breeding History: 'Alotta' (experimental designation GP250) resulted from the cross between the varieties 'Mercato' and 'Vorobey' made at the International Centre for Maize and Wheat Improvement (CIMMYT) in Toluca, Mexico during the winter of 2007. The variety was advanced from the F1 to F8 generation based on plant height, tillering ability, spike fertility, maturity and disease resistances where one line was designated GP250 in 2017. The line was evaluated in Alberta for yield and in Alberta and British Columbia for disease resistances in 2016 and 2017. The line was further evaluated in replicated multi-location advanced yield trials in 2018 and entered in the Special Purpose Wheat Registration Tests from 2020 to 2021. Breeder seed was established at the F13 generation in 2022

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Alotta' was conducted at the Edmonton Research Station, University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta during the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons. There were 3 replicates arranged in a RCB design. Each plot consisted of 6 rows, each row measuring 2.6 metres long, with an inter-row spacing of 19 cm and 50 cm between the plots. The planting density of 300 seeds per square metre resulted in approximately 2340 plants per variety per year. Measured characteristics were based on 60 measurements per variety per year except for kernel weight which was based on 3 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on LSD values.
