Varieties used for comparison: '5701PR', 'AAC Foray' and 'AAC Penhold'
Summary: The flag leaf of 'UA Forefront' is longer than that of '5701PR'. The flag leaf of 'UA Forefront' is wider than the flag leaves of '5701PR' and 'AAC Foray' and narrower than that of 'AAC Penhold'. The plants of 'UA Forefront' head earlier than those of 'AAC Foray'. The plants of 'UA Forefront' are shorter than those of '5701PR' and 'AAC Foray' and taller than those of 'AAC Penhold'. Excluding the awns, the spike of 'UA Forefront' is longer than those of the reference varieties. The awns of 'UA Forefront' range between shorter and shorter to equal the length of the spike while the awns of 'AAC Foray' range between equal and equal to longer than the length of the spike. The plants of 'UA Forefront' mature later than those of '5701PR'. The kernel of 'UA Forefront' is medium red while the kernel of 'AAC Foray' is light red. The 1000 kernel weight of 'UA Forefront' is less than that of 'AAC Foray'.

SEEDLING (4-leaf stage): medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves
FLAG LEAF: medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, strong glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath
CULM NECK: ranging between medium to strong and strong glaucosity, straight
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin pith in cross-section, anthocyanin colouration absent
SPIKE: ranging between weak to medium and medium to strong glaucosity at heading, parallel sided in profile, medium to dense, white at maturity, erect attitude
AWNS: ranging between shorter and shorter to equal the length of the spike, white at maturity
LOWER GLUME: ranging between medium and medium to long, ranging between small to medium and medium width, glabrous

Origin & Breeding History: 'UA Forefront' (experimental designations UAW1219*F5MBK08 & HY2082) resulted from the cross between the line HY1317 and variety '5701PR' conducted at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta in 2012. The variety was developed using a modified bulk method of plant breeding. The variety was advanced from the F1 to the F4 generation based on plant height, maturity and disease resistance. In 2014, 27 F5 head rows were selected and tested in preliminary yield trials in Edmonton and assessed for disease resistance in Edmonton and Lethbridge, Alberta and Creston, British Columbia. One line was designated UAW1219*F5MBK08 based on agronomic traits, disease resistance and end-use quality traits. The line was further evaluated in replicated multi-location advanced yield trials in 2015, in the high yield Wheat Cooperative B test in 2016 and entered in the High Yield Wheat Cooperative test as HY2082 from 2017 to 2019. Breeder seed was established at the F13 generation in 2019
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'UA Forefront' was conducted at the Edmonton Research Station, University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta during the 2020 and 2023 growing seasons. There were 3 replicates arranged in a RCB design. Each plot consisted of 6 rows, each row measuring 2.6 metres long, with an inter-row spacing of 19 cm and 50 cm between the plots.The planting density of 300 seeds per square metre resulted in approximately 2340 plants per variety per year. Measured characteristics were based on 60 measurements per variety per year except for kernel weight which was based on 3 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on LSD values.
