Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: '25R74'

Summary: At the 5-9 tiller stage, the plants of '6PNHF40B' have a semi-erect growth habit while the plants of '25R74' have an intermediate growth habit. At booting, '6PNHF40B' has an absent or very low frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves while '25R74' has a high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves. At heading. the spike of '6PNHF40B' has a tapering shape in profile while that of '25R74' has a parallel sided shape in profile. At maturity, the straw of '6PNHF40B' has a thin pith in cross section while that of '25R74' has a pith of medium thickness in cross section. The spike of '6PNHF40B' is of a medium density while that of '25R74' is dense.

Description:

PLANT: common wheat, winter type, semi-erect growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, absent or very low frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, heads emerge mid-season

SEEDLING (4 LEAF STAGE): glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration of the auricles, absent or very weak glaucosity of sheath, glabrous sheath and blade

CULM: absent or very weak glaucosity at heading, straight neck
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin pith in cross-section

SPIKE: weak glaucosity at heading, tapering in profile at heading, medium density, white at maturity, incline attitude
AWNS: longer than spike, brown at maturity

KERNEL: soft red type, amber

Origin & Breeding History: ‘6PNHF40B' (experimental designation 6035DR56-01) was developed using the double haploid method of plant breeding. The variety resulted from a cross between the varieties 'XW16G' and '25R74' conducted at Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. in Windfall, Indiana, USA in 2015. Haploid induction occurred on the resulting F1 generation in 2016. The variety was advanced in Windfall, Indiana based on grain yield, test weight, maturity, disease resistance, plant type, plant height, head type, straw strength as well as milling and baking characteristics with one D0 line designated as 6035DR56-01 in 2017. Breeder seed was established at the D3 generation in 2020.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for ‘6PNHF40B' was conducted at Pioneer Hi-Bred Production Limited in Caledon, Ontario during the 2023 growing season. There were 3 replicates arranged in an RCB design. Each plot consisted of 7 rows, each row measuring 3.6 metres long, with an inter-row spacing of 20 cm. The planting density resulted in 7800 plants per variety per year. Measured characteristics were based on 24 measurements per variety per year. Results were supported by the official technical examination report 202300043, purchased from the Plant Variety Protection Office in Washington, District of Columbia, USA.
