Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Montcalm' and 'Priesley'
Summary: At the 5-9 tiller stage,'Redford' has an erect growth habit while the reference varieties have a semi-erect growth habit. At booting, the flag leaf of 'Redford' is longer and wider than those of 'Montcalm' and 'Priesley'. The flag leaf sheath of 'Redford' has strong glaucosity while the flag leaf sheath of 'Montcalm' has a medium degree of glaucosity and that of 'Priesley' has very strong glaucosity. The plants of 'Redford' head earlier than those of Montcalm'. At heading, the spike of 'Redford' has medium to strong glaucosity while the spike of 'Montcalm' has very strong glaucosity and that of 'Priesley' has strong to very strong glaucosity. At maturity, the plants of 'Redford' are shorter than the plants of Montcalm' and taller than those of 'Priesley'. The spike of 'Redford' is tapering and very lax to lax while the spike of Priesley' is parallel sided and dense. The spike of 'Redford' is longer than the spike of Priesley'. The kernel of 'Redford' is dark red while that of 'Priesley' is medium red. The kernel weight for 'Redford' is greater than those of the reference varieties.
Description:
PLANT: common winter type, erect growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, low frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, heads emerge mid-season, matures mid-season
SEEDLING (4-leaf stage): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves
FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, strong glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath
CULM: medium degree of glaucosity at heading, straight neck
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin pith in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration
SPIKE: medium to strong glaucosity at heading, tapering shape in profile, very lax to lax, white at maturity, nodding attitude, absent or very sparse hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNLETS: shorter than spike, white at maturity
LOWER GLUME: long, medium to wide, glabrous
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: medium to broad, straight to elevated
LOWER GLUME BEAK: short, straight
LOWEST LEMMA: straight beak
KERNEL: hard red type, dark red, large to very large, medium length, medium to wide, oval to broad elliptical in shape, angular cheek, medium to long brush hairs, narrow crease of medium depth
GERM: medium size, broad elliptical
Origin & Breeding History: Redford' (experimental designation CM20-006) was developed using the pedigree method of plant breeding. The variety originated from a three-way cross conducted at the Pflanzenzucht Oberlimpurg breeding station, in Oberlimpurg, Germany. The initial cross between the variety Barok' and the line ACS55014 was followed by a cross with the variety Journey' in 2007. The variety was advanced based on yield, lodging resistance, diseases resistance as well as milling and bread making quality with one F3 line designated CM20-006 in 2020. Breeder seed was established at the F9 generation in 2016.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'Redford' were conducted at C&M Seeds in Palmerston, Ontario during the 2023 and 2024 growing seasons. There were 4 replicates with plots arranged in a RCB design. Each plot consisted of 8 rows, each row measuring 4.0 metres long with an inter-row spacing of 15 cm. The planting density of 400 seeds per square metre resulted in approximately 6400 plants per variety per year. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
