Summary: At anthesis, the flag leaf of 'CDC Wiseton' is shorter and narrower than those of 'CDC Verona' and ‘AAC Cabri'. At maturity, the plants of 'CDC Wiseton' are taller than the plants of ‘CDC Precision' and 'AAC Cabri'. The awns on the spike of 'CDC Wiseton' are white while those of ‘CDC Credence' are brown.

Description:

PLANT: durum wheat, spring type, erect growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, low to medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, heads mid-season, matures mid-season

SEEDLING (4-leaf stage): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, strong to very strong glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM: medium to strong glaucosity at anthesis, straight to slightly curved neck
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin to medium thickness of pith in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration

SPIKE: strong to very strong glaucosity at anthesis, parallel in profile, dense, yellow at maturity, erect attitude, sparse to medium density of hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: shorter than spike, white at maturity
LOWER GLUME: long, narrow to medium width, glabrous, sparse internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow to medium width, elevated to strongly elevated with 2nd point present
LOWER GLUME BEAK: medium to long, slightly to moderatley curved
LOWEST LEMMA: ranging between straight and straight to slightly curved beak

KERNEL: hard durum, dark red, medium to large, medium to long, narrow to medium width, elliptical in shape, angular cheek, very short to short brush hairs, medium to wide crease, medium to deep crease
GERM: medium size, elliptical to broad elliptical

Origin & Breeding History: ‘CDC Wiseton' (experimental designations DT1204 & D13.055.063) originated from a three-way cross conducted at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The initial cross between the lines DT562 and DT719 was followed by a cross between the resulting F1 and the line DT577 in 2013. The variety was advanced with an F4:5 line designated D13.055.063 in 2016 based on plant stature, time to maturity and straw strength. With further selections based on yield, seed pigmentation, grain protein concentration, gluten strength, agronomic traits and disease resistance, the variety was entered in the Durum Wheat Registration Tests as DT1024 from 2020 to 2022. Breeder seed was established from 199 F9 derived F11 lines in 2022.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'CDC Wiseton' were conducted at the Crop Development Centre Seed Farm, University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the 2022 and 2024 growing seasons. There were 3 replicates with plots arranged in a RCB design. Each plot consisted of 5 rows, each row measuring 4.0 metres long with an inter-row spacing of 20 cm. The planting density of approximately 300 seeds per square metre resulted in a minimum of 3825 plants per variety per year. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year except for plant height which was based on 40 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
