Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Landmark', 'AAC Brandon' and 'AAC Concord'
Summary: At booting, 'AAC Oakman' has a medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves while 'CDC Landmark' and 'AAC Brandon' have a high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves. The flag leaf of 'AAC Oakman' is shorter than that of 'AAC Brandon'. The flag leaf of 'AAC Oakman' is wider than that of 'CDC Landmark'. The flag leaf sheath and blade of 'AAC Oakman' have a medium degree of glaucosity whereas those of 'CDC Landmark' have weak glaucosity. At maturity, the plants of 'AAC Oakman' are shorter than the plants of 'AAC Concord'. The straw of 'AAC Oakman' has a medium to thick pith in cross section whereas that of 'AAC Brandon' has a thin pith in cross section. The spike of 'AAC Oakman' has a tapering shape while that of 'AAC Concord' is semi-clavate to fusiform in shape. The spike of 'AAC Oakman' is awned while that of 'AAC Concord' is awnletted. Excluding awns and awnlets, the spike of 'AAC Oakman' is longer than that of 'CDC Landmark'. The spike of 'AAC Oakman' has an erect attitude while that of 'AAC Brandon' has an inclined attitude.
Description:
PLANT: common wheat, spring type, intermediate growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves
SEEDLING (4 LEAF STAGE): weak anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves
FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium degree of glaucosity of sheath and lower side of the blade, glabrous blade and sheath
CULM: strong glaucosity at heading, straight neck at maturity
STRAW (AT MATURITY): medium to thick pith in cross-section
SPIKE: medium glaucosity at heading, tapering shape in profile, lax density, white at maturity, erect attitude, awns present
AWNS: shorter than the length of spike, white at maturity
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: ranging from narrow to medium, ranging from slightly sloping to straight
LOWER GLUME BEAK: medium length, ranging from straight to slightly curved
KERNEL: hard red type, dark red
REACTION TO INSECTS: resistant to Orange Wheat Blossom Midge (Sitodiplosis mosellana), moderately resistant to Wheat Stem Sawfly (Cephus cinctus)
Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Oakman' (experimental designations BW5104 and B1761&AU018) is a double haploid genotype which originated from the cross between 'AAC Concord' and 'AAC Alida' conducted in 2017 at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Swift Current Research and Development Centre. A marker associated with a locus conferring stem pith expression was used to screen haploid plants for chromosome doubling. In 2018, DH1 lines were screened in a leaf and stem rust nursery with selection based on disease resistance, maturity, plant height and stem strength. In 2020, a DH2 line B1761&AU018 was entered in the Western Bread A_1' test. From 2021-2023, it was evaluated as BW5104 in the Western Bread Wheat C registration tests. Breeder seed was established from a random selection of DH2 breeder lines in 2021.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'AAC Oakman' were conducted at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Swift Current Research and Development Centre in Swift Current, Saskatchewan during the 2022 and 2024 growing seasons. Plots consisted of four replications arranged in a RCB design with each plot consisting of four rows with a row length of 4 metres and row spacing of 23 cm. The planting density was 220 seeds per square metre, resulted in approximately 3200 plants per variety, per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on LSD values. Insect reaction ratings were provided through the Disease Evaluation Team of the Prairie Recommending Committee for Wheat, Rye and Triticale from the registration trials conducted from 2021 to 2023.
