Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Hodge' and 'AAC Leroy'

Summary: The coleoptile of ‘AAC Craven' has a medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration while that of ‘AAC LeRoy' has a weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The flag leaf auricles of 'AAC Craven' have a medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration while the flag leaf auricles of 'AAC Hodge' have an absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The flag leaf sheath of 'AAC Craven' has strong to very strong glaucosity while the flag leaf sheath of ‘AAC Hodge' has a weak to medium degree of glaucosity and that of ‘AAC LeRoy' has medium to strong glaucosity. At heading, the spike of 'AAC Craven' has strong to very strong glaucosity while the spike of ‘AAC Hodge' has medium to strong glaucosity. The spike of 'AAC Craven' is dense while the spike of ‘AAC LeRoy' is of a medium density. At maturity and including the spike and awns, the plants of 'AAC Craven' are shorter than the plants of the reference varieties. The kernel of 'AAC Craven' is dark red in colour while the kernel of 'AAC LeRoy' is medium red.

Description:

PLANT: common wheat, spring type, intermediate to semi-prostrate growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, heads emerge mid-season

SEEDLING (4 LEAF STAGE): medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile

FLAG LEAF: medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, strong to very strong glaucosity of sheath, strong glaucosity on lower side of blade

CULM: medium to strong glaucosity at heading
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin to medium width pith in cross-section

SPIKE: strong to very strong glaucosity at heading, tapering to parallel sided in profile, dense, brownish yellow at maturity
AWNS: shorter than spike

KERNEL: hard red type, dark red

Origin & Breeding History: ‘AAC Craven' (experimental designations 16SB130*L0728 and BW1127) originated from the cross between the varieties ‘AAC LeRoy' and ‘AAC Starbuck' conducted at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Brandon Research and Development Centre in Brandon, Manitoba in 2016. From the resulting F1 generation, double haploid lines were created in 2018. One DH line identified as 16SB130*L0728 went through adaptation and pre-registration testing and was screened for agronomic suitability, disease/pest resistance and grain quality. This line was evaluated as BW1127 in the Central Bread Wheat Registration trials from 2021 to 2023. Breeder seed was established at DH7 in 2003.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'AAC Craven' were conducted at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Saskatoon Research and Development Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan during the 2023 and 2024 growing seasons. There were 3 replicates arranged in a RCB design. Each plot consisted of 5 rows, each row measuring 3.35 metres long with an inter-row spacing of 18 centimetres. The planting density resulted in approximately 3000 plants per variety per year. Measured characteristics were based on 21 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence level based on a paired Students t-test.
