Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Brandon' and 'CDC Abound'

Summary: At booting, ‘CDC Power CLPlus' has a very high frequency of plants with recurved leaves whereas ‘CDC Abound' has high frequency of plants with recurved leaves. The flag leaf auricles of ‘CDC Coherent CLPlus' have an absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas those of ‘CDC Abound' have a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The flag leaf of ‘CDC Coherent CLPlus' is longer than that of ‘CDC Abound'. The flag leaf of ‘CDC Coherent CLPlus' is wider than those of ‘AAC Brandon' and ‘CDC Abound'. At heading, the spike length, excluding the awns, of ‘CDC Coherent CLPlus' is longer than that of the reference varieties. At maturity, the plants, including the spike and awns, of 'CDC Coherent CLPlus' are shorter than those of the reference varieties. The lower glume shoulder of ‘CDC Coherent CLPlus' is elevated whereas it is straight for the reference varieties. The lower glume beak of ‘CDC Coherent CLPlus' ranges between short to medium and medium in length whereas that of‘AAC Brandon' ranges between medium to long.

Description:

PLANT: spring type, common wheat, erect growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, very high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, heads emerge early to mid-season, matures mid-season

SEEDLING (4-LEAF STAGE): absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium to strong glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM: medium degree of glaucosity, curved neck at maturity
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin pith in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration

SPIKE: medium to strong degree of glaucosity at heading, tapering shape in profile, medium density, yellow at maturity, erect attitude, sparse to medium density of hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: present, longer than spike, white at maturity
LOWER GLUME: medium length and width, glabrous, sparse extent internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: medium width, elevated
LOWER GLUME BEAK: ranging between short to medium and medium in length, moderately curved
LOWEST LEMMA: straight beak

KERNEL: hard red type, medium red, medium size, medium length and width, ovate shape, rounded cheek, medium length brush hairs
KERNEL CREASE: medium width, medium depth
GERM: medium sized, round

Origin & Breeding History: ‘CDC Coherent CLPlus' (experimental designations BW5115 and IR19170) originated from a controlled cross conducted in a greenhouse in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in the fall of 2012 between ‘AAC Brandon' and the line BW919 with the resulting offspring being back-crossed to ‘AAC Brandon'. From 2013 to 2016, the F1 to F6 generations were bulked and advanced in Saskatoon or in a contra season nursery in New Zealand and the F7 generation was planted in a space-planted nursery in Saskatoon. Selections were made from the F8 and F9 hill plots based on plant type, straw strength, and disease reactions. A bulked F7 hill was used as a seed source for an unreplicated yield test in 2018 where selections were made based on herbicide tolerance, yield, kernel characteristics, plant height, and straw strength. Replicated yield testing occurred using the designation IR19170 in 2019 and 2020. IR19170 was then advanced and further evaluated at BW5115 in the Western Bread Wheat ‘C' Registration Trials from 2021 to 2023. Breeder seed was established at the F13 generation in 2023.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for ‘CDC Coherent CLPlus' were conducted at the University of Saskatchewan, Crop Science Field Facility during the 2024 and 2025 growing seasons. There were 4 replications per variety arranged in an RCB design. Plots consisted of 5 rows, each row 3.6 metres long with an inter-row spacing of 0.23 metres. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year, except the plant height which were based on 40 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values.
