Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Penhold', 'UA Forefront' and 'HY2149'

Summary: At the 4-leaf stage, the coleoptile of ‘UA Brynn' has a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration while the coleoptile of ‘AAC Penhold' has a weak intensity of anthocyanin coloration and those of ‘UA Forefront' and ‘HY2149' have an absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin coloration. At booting, ‘UA Brynn' has a high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves while ‘HY2149' has a low to medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves. The flag leaf auricles of ‘UA Brynn' have a weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin coloration while the flag leaf auricles of ‘AAC Penhold' and ‘UA Forefront' have a medium to high intensity of anthocyanin coloration and those of ‘HY2149' have an absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin coloration. The flag leaf of ‘UA Brynn' is narrower than the flag leaf of ‘AAC Penhold' and wider than that of ‘HY2149'. The plants of ‘UA Brynn' head later than those of ‘HY2149'. At maturity and including the awns, the plants of ‘UA Brynn' are shorter than those of ‘UA Forefront' and ‘HY2149'. Excluding the awns, the spike of ‘UA Brynn' is shorter than the spike of ‘UA Forefront'. The lower glume of ‘UA Brynn' is of a medium length and width while that of ‘HY2149' is short and narrow. The lower glume beak of ‘UA Brynn' is long to very long while that of ‘HY2149' is medium to long. The plants of ‘UA Brynn' mature later than the plants of ‘AAC Penhold' and ‘HY2149'. The kernel of ‘UA Brynn' ranges between medium to long and long and is of a medium width while the kernel of ‘HY2149' is short to medium in length and narrow. The kernel weight of ‘UA Brynn' is greater than that of ‘HY2149'.

SEEDLING (4-leaf stage): medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, ranging between strong and strong to very strong glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM: medium to strong glaucosity at anthesis, slightly curved neck
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin pith in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration

SPIKE: medium degree of glaucosity at anthesis, parallel-sided in profile, dense, white at maturity, erect attitude
AWNS: shorter than spike, white at maturity
LOWER GLUME: medium length and width, glabrous
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: absent or very narrow to narrow, sloping to slightly sloping
LOWER GLUME BEAK: long to very long, straight to slightly curved

KERNEL: hard red type, medium red, medium size, ranging between medium to long and long, medium width, elliptical in shape, rounded cheek, medium length brush hairs, narrow to medium width crease, shallow to medium depth crease
GERM: medium size, broad elliptical

Origin & Breeding History: ‘UA Brynn' (experimental designations UAW15475*F8MBK15 & HY2161) originated from a cross between an experimental line designated HY2022 and the variety ‘CDC Terrain' conducted at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta in 2012. The variety was advanced to the F5 generation based on disease resistance, plant height and maturity using a modified bulk breeding method. In 2017-18, 144 single F6 plants were selected based on agronomic traits and assessed for leaf rust resistance. The F8 generation was further assessed for yield and disease resistances where one line was designated UAW15475*F8MBK15. The line was entered as HY2161 in the High Yield Wheat Resgistration Trials from 2022 to 2024. Breeder seed was established in 2024 from 95 F12 head rows where marker analysis confirmed the absence of the Sm1 gene.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for ‘UA Brynn' were conducted at the Edmonton Research Station, University of Albert in Edmonton, Alberta during the 2024 and 2025 growing seasons. There were 3 replicates with plots arranged in a RCB design. Each plot consisted of 6 rows, each row measuring 3.0 metres long with an inter-row spacing of 19 cm. The planting density of approximately 300 seeds per square metre resulted in a minimum of 3000 plants per variety per year. Measured characteristics were based on 45 measurements per variety per year except for kernel weight, which was based on 3 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on LSD values.
