Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Sunbelkupi' (Million Bells Trailing Pink)

Summary: 'Caltrapi' is a calibrachoa variety which produces plants which have shorter shoots than 'Sunbelkupi'. The apex of the leaf blade of 'Caltrapi' is narrow acute, whereas it is broad acute to obtuse in 'Sunbelkupi'. The plants of 'Caltrapi' are more floriferous than the reference variety. The two varieties are very similar in main flower colour, however, 'Caltrapi' has a wider band of purple violet secondary colour at the transition to the corolla tube. The veins on the inner side of the corolla tube are more conspicuous in 'Caltrapi' than in 'Sunbelkupi'.

Description:

'Caltrapi' is a calibrachoa variety with a trailing growth habit. The shoots are thin, short to medium in length and have very weak anthocyanin colouration. The leaves are medium in length and narrow to medium in width. The leaf blade is medium green in colour and oblanceolate in shape, with a narrow acute apex and no blistering. The petiole is short. The sepals are short and narrow and are rhombic in shape, with no anthocyanin colouration.

The plants of 'Caltrapi' are very floriferous and produce single flowers which are large in diameter and funnel shaped. The pedicel is long. The corolla has moderate lobing. The main colour of the upper side of the corolla is red purple. The secondary colour is purple violet and it is located at the transition to the corolla tube. The veins on the upper side of the corolla are purple and are weakly conspicuous. The undulation of the corolla margin is weak. The apex of the corolla lobe of 'Caltrapi' is retuse. The corolla tube is short and light yellow on the inner side. The veins on the corolla tube are strongly conspicuous on the inner side. The anthers of 'Caltrapi' are yellow.

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Caltrapi' originated from the cross of Y990-2 and Y992. Y990-2 is a pink flower colour selection, having compact growth and a compact spreading plant habit. Y992 is a pink flower colour selection, having compact growth and compact spreading plant habit. As a result of this cross the variety 'Caltrapi' was created in 1999 in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands.

Tests & Trials: The tests and trials for 'Caltrapi' were conducted in a polyhouse in St. Thomas, Ontario, during the summer of 2004. The trial consisted of a total of 18 plants of each variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings, transplanted into 10 inch baskets on May 27, 2004. Each basket contained 3 cuttings, with a total of 6 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on July 16, 2004. All colour measurements were made using the RHS Colour Chart 2001.
