Origin & Breeding History: 'Kakegawa S65' originated from a hybridization conducted in November of 1998 in Kakegawa, Japan. The female parent was variety 'Kakegawa S24' (Liricashower Pure White) and the male parent was the breeding line designated '97-1176'. In February of 1999, F1 seed was sown and the resulting seedlings were transplanted outdoors. Five plants with good rose flower colour were selected and intercrossed to produce F2 generation seed. In August of 1999, seed from the F2 generation were sown and later transplanted outdoors. Two plants were selected for vegetative propagation based on their white flowers and extra compact plant growth habit. In August of 2002, these selections were planted in 9 cm hanging pots for evaluation in greenhouse and open field trials. Using new vegetatively propagated plants, one selection was further evaluated in Salinas, California, USA during 2003. This selection was named 'Kakegawa S65'.

Tests & Trials: The test and trial for 'Kakegawa S65' was conducted in a polyhouse at Variety Rights Management in Oxford Station, Ontario during the summer of 2005. The trial included 15 plants of each variety grown in 10 cm pots. The plants were spaced 13 cm apart. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
