Origin & Breeding History: 'Sunbel-labu' originated from a cross of '9LB6' as the female parent and '9LB1' as the male parent in April 2000 at Omi Research Center, Shiga-ken, Japan. In September 2000, 50 seedlings of this cross were grown in pots in a glasshouse and evaluated. One seedling was selected based on its growth habit, flower size and colour in September 2001. That seedling was propagated by cuttings and a trial was carried out by potting and bedding from April to October 2002 where it was evaluated and described.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Sunbel-labu' were conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2005 in St. Thomas, Ontario. Trials included a total of 18 plants of each variety. Plants were grown from rooted cuttings transplanted into 25 cm baskets on May 27, 2005. Each basket contained 3 cuttings with a total of six baskets per variety. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 RHS colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten plant measurements.
