The flowers produced by 'Kakegawa S80' are single type. Anthocyanin colouration of the sepals is absent. The degree of lobing of the corolla is weak. The inner side of the corolla is white with dark blue violet secondary colour in the area of transition to the corolla tube and along the midribs of the corolla lobes. The main colour of the outer side of the corolla is also white. The lobes of the corolla have truncate shaped apex. The inner side of the corolla tube is yellow and conspicuousness of the veins within the corolla tube is strong.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Kakegawa S80' originated from a hybridization conducted in October of 1999 in Kakegawa, Japan. The female parent was an unnamed breeding line with red flowers and semi-creeping plant growth habit designated '9B-58C' and the male parent was another unnamed breeding line with bronze venation of the corolla and semi-upright plant growth habit designated '7BC-42A-1'. From February of 2000 to August of 2001, five selections and crosses were conducted to produce F5 seed. The selection criteria at each generation was the colour of the venation of the corolla and plant growth habit. From the F5 generation, one seedling was selected for vegetative propagation based on its deep blue venation of the corolla and semi-creeping plant growth habit. This selection was planted in 9 cm hanging pots for evaluation in greenhouse and open field trials. The selection was subsequently named 'Kakegawa S80'.

Tests & Trials: The test and trial for 'Kakegawa S80' was conducted in a polyhouse at Variety Rights Management in Oxford Station, Ontario during the summer of 2005. The trial included 15 plants of each variety grown in 10 cm pots. The plants were spaced 13 cm apart. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
