The cross was made between two proprietary varieties, the female parent 'CA 09 1174' and the male parent 'X J 901', in August 2010. Seedlings were selected in May 2011 based on their flower colour, stability in double-type flowering and plant growth habit. The selected seedlings were evaluated in greenhouse trials from February to May 2012, in Stuttgart, Germany. A single seedling was selected for commercialization and named 'KLECA13257' in July 2012.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'KLECA13257' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2016 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm hanging baskets on April 20, 2016. Each basket contained 4 cuttings with a total of 5 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 13 and 14, 2016. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
