Origin & Breeding History: 'SAKCAL104' originated from a hybrid cross conducted at Kakegawa Research Station in 2006 by the breeder, Akinobu Ui, an employee of Sakata Seed Corporation, in Kakegawa, Japan. The cross involved the two proprietary varieties, '6dw-54B' as the female parent and '5Bdw-70A-1C' as the male parent. In November 2006, an F1 generation from the initial hybridization was grown and approximately 150 seeds were obtained. In February 2007, the seeds were sown in a greenhouse. From the resultant progeny, a single plant was selected in May 2007 based on its pink flower colour and compact plant growth habit. In July 2007, this plant was vegetatively propagated, cultivated and evaluated to confirm that the selection characteristics were fixed and stable. In February 2008, the selection was re-propagated, further cultivated and named 'SAKCAL104'.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'SAKCAL104' was conducted as an outdoor irrigated hanging basket trial during the summer of 2014 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm hanging baskets on April 18, 2014 and transferred outside on June 10, 2014. Each basket contained 4 cuttings with a total of 5 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of each variety on June 23, 2014. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
