Origin & Breeding History: 'SAKCAL105' originated from a hybrid cross conducted at Kakegawa Research Station in 2007 by the breeder, Akinobu Ui, an employee of Sakata Seed Corporation, in Kakegawa, Japan. The cross involved the two proprietary varieties, '7-1A' as the female parent and '6dw-54A-2' as the male parent. In November 2007, an F1 generation from the initial hybridization was grown and approximately 200 seeds were obtained. In February 2008, the seeds were sown in a greenhouse. From these, the breeder conducted a cross between two selections and approximately 900 seeds were obtained. From the resultant progeny, a single plant was selected in July 2008 based on its rosy red flower colour and compact plant growth habit. In February 2009, this plant was vegetatively propagated, cultivated and evaluated to confirm that the selection characteristics remained stable. This selection was later named 'SAKCAL105'.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'SAKCAL105' was conducted as an outdoor irrigated hanging basket trial during the summer of 2014 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm hanging baskets on April 18, 2014 and transferred outside on June 10, 2014. Each basket contained 4 cuttings with a total of 5 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of each variety on June 24, 2014. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
