Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Sunbel 871' (Million Bells Bouquet Deep Red) and 'Cabaret Red'

Summary: The plants of 'Incalimred' are shorter than the plants of 'Sunbel 871' and 'Cabaret Red'. The plants of 'Incalimred' are narrower than those of 'Sunbel 871'. The main colour of the upper side of the leaf blade for 'Incalimred' is medium green whereas it is dark green for 'Sunbel 871'. The pedicel length for 'Incalimred' is shorter than the pedicel length for both references. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the pedicel for 'Incalimred' is strong whereas the intensity is medium for 'Sunbel 871'. The degree of lobing for the corolla of 'Incalimred' is medium whereas it is weak for 'Sunbel 871'. The main color of the inner side of the corolla for 'Incalimred' is red with purple red tones, whereas the inner side of the corolla is dark purple red for both reference varieties. The main color of the outer side of the corolla for 'Incalimred' is blue pink whereas it is darker blue pink for 'Sunbel 871' and purple red to blue pink for 'Cabaret Red'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Incalimred' was bred and developed by the breeder, Mrs. Birgit Hofmann, an employee of InnovaPlant GmbH. & Co. KG., Gensingen, Germany. It originated from a controlled cross conducted in December 2013 in Heidesheim, Germany, between the female parent variety 'Aloha Cherry' and a proprietary breeding line designated 'Ca12-3023-4' as the male parent. From the resulting progeny 'Incalimred' was selected in June 2014, based on criteria for early flowering, flower size, good branching and plant vigour. Asexual reproduction of 'Incalimred' was first conducted by vegetative cuttings in June 2014, in Gensingen, Germany.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Incalimred' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2017 at BioFlora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. It included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. The plants were grown from rooted cuttings, with 4 cuttings each transplanted into one of five, 26 cm hanging basket, per variety, on May 2, 2017. Unless otherwise stated, the observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or 10 parts of plants of each variety on June 27, 2017. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
