Summary: The plants of 'BBCAL26702' are shorter than those of 'Lindura Cosmos Hot Pink'. The leaf blade length for 'BBCAL26702' is shorter than that for 'Lindura Cosmos Hot Pink' and 'USCAL42202'. The pedicel length is shorter for 'BBCAL26702' than for 'Lindura Cosmos Hot Pink'. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the pedicel for 'BBCAL26702' is weak at the base of the calyx whereas the intensity for 'USCAL42202' is medium to strong. The width of the corolla is smaller for 'BBCAL26702' than for 'Lindura Cosmos Hot Pink'. The main colour of the inner side of the corolla for 'BBCAL26702' is purple whereas it is blue violet for 'USCAL42202' and purple with dark violet secondary veins for 'Lindura Cosmos Hot Pink'. The inner side of the corolla of 'BBCAL26702' has no secondary colour present whereas the corolla of 'Lindura Cosmos Hot Pink' has light yellow secondary colour along the fused parts of the corolla lobe.

AREA OF COLOUR CHANGE AT TRANSITION TO COROLLA TUBE (INNER SIDE): small to medium size, star-shaped, dark violet (RHS 79A)
MARKING AT TRANSITION TO COROLLA TUBE (INNER SIDE): very large, star and wedge shaped, yellow
COROLLA TUBE (INNER SIDE): yellow (RHS 15A fading to 12A towards opening), absent to weak conspicuousness of veins

Origin & Breeding History: 'BBCAL26702' was bred and developed by the breeder, Brent D. Barnes, an employee of Plant 21 LLC, Bonsall, California, USA. It originated from a controlled cross, conducted on November 6, 2013, in Bonsall, California, between the female parent variety 'USCAL42202' and the male parent, an unknown seedling designated '12C363-02'. From the resulting progeny, 'BBCAL26702' was selected on July 2, 2014 based on criteria for flower colour, colour pattern and plant branching habit. Asexual reproduction of 'BBCAL26702' was first conducted by vegetative cuttings in July 2014 in Bonsall, California.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'BBCAL26702' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2017 at BioFlora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. It included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. The plants were grown from rooted cuttings, with 4 cuttings transplanted into each of five, 26 cm hanging baskets per variety, on May 2, 2017. Unless otherwise stated, the observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or 10 parts of plants of each variety, on June 27, 2017. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
