Summary: The plants of 'BBCAL27801' are taller than those of 'KLECA14263'. The pedicel length of 'BBCAL27801' is longer than that of 'KLECA14263'. The anthocyanin colouration of the pedicel is medium to strong for 'BBCAL27801' while it is absent or very weak for 'KLECA14263'. The degree of lobing of the flower for 'BBCAL27801' is weak while it is medium for 'KLECA14263'. For the newly open flower, the shape of the colour change at the transition to the corolla tube for 'BBCAL27801' is star-shaped whereas it is rounded for 'KLECA14263'. The colour of the inner side of the corolla of 'BBCAL27801' is light blue violet with violet tones becoming light blue violet at maturity whereas the corolla of 'KLECA14263' is light blue pink becoming light blue violet at maturity. The main colour at the transition to the corolla tube for 'BBCAL27801' is violet and dark violet while it is dark purple red for 'KLECA14263'. The size of the marking at the transition to the corolla tube for 'BBCAL27801' is very large while it is absent to very small for 'KLECA14263'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'BBCAL27801' was bred and developed by the breeder, Brent D. Barnes, an employee of Plant 21 LLC, in Bonsall, California, USA. It originated from a controlled cross, conducted on November 13, 2013, in Bonsall, California, between the female parent, an unknown seedling coded '12C363-02' and the male parent, an unknown seedling coded '12C464-14'. From the resulting progeny, 'BBCAL27801' was selected on July 2, 2014 based on criteria for flower colour, colour pattern and plant branching habit. Asexual reproduction of 'BBCAL27801' was first conducted by vegetative cuttings on July 2, 2014, in Bonsall, California.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'BBCAL27801' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2017 at BioFlora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. It included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. The plants were grown from rooted cuttings, with 4 cuttings transplanted into each of five, 26 cm hanging baskets per variety, on March 2, 2017. Unless otherwise stated, the observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or 10 parts of plants, of each variety, on June 27, 2017. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
