Summary: The plants of 'JGCAL09404' are larger than those of 'Lindura Dark Blue'. The leaf blade apex is obtuse for 'JGCAL09404' while it is narrow acute for 'USCAL68604'. The pedicel length is longer for 'JGCAL09404' than the pedicel length for 'Lindura Dark Blue'. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the pedicel is medium to strong for 'JGCAL09404' while it is weak for 'USCAL68604' and absent to weak for 'Lindura Dark Blue'. The flower width for 'JGCAL09404' is broader than that for 'USCAL68604' and 'Lindura Dark Blue'. The degree of lobing for 'JGCAL09404' is strong while it is medium for 'USCAL68604' and weak for 'Lindura Dark Blue'. The area of the colour change at the transition to the corolla tube is large and dark violet to brown purple for 'JGCAL09404, whereas the area of colour change is very large and black for 'USCAL68604' and the area is small and dark violet to brown purple for 'Lindura Dark Blue'. The shape of the colour change at the transition to the corolla tube is rounded for 'JGCAL09404' while it is star-shaped for 'USCAL68604 and 'Lindura Dark Blue'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'JGCAL09404' was bred and developed by the breeder, Jessica Grice, at Plant 21, Bonsall, California, USA. It originated from a controlled cross conducted on Sepyember 11, 2013, in Bonsall, California, between the female parent variety 'Aloha Kona Midnight Blue' and the male parent, an unknown seedling coded '11C110-02'. From the resulting progeny, 'JGCAL09404' was selected on July 9, 2014 based on criteria for flower size, good rooting characteristics and improved root disease resistance. Asexual reproduction of 'JGCAL09404' was first conducted by vegetative cuttings on July 15, 2014 in Bonsall, California, US.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'JGCAL09404' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2017 at BioFlora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. It included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. The plants were grown from rooted cuttings, with 4 cuttings transplanted into each of five, 26 cm hanging baskets per variety, on May 2, 2017. Unless otherwise indicated, the observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or 10 parts of plants, of each variety, on June 27, 2017. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
