Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'KLECA16006' (Superbells Rising Star) and 'USCALCHSTM' (Superbells Holy Moly!)

Summary: The pedicel of 'BBCAL85303' is longer than that of 'KLECA16006' and shorter than that of 'USCALCHSTM'. The pedicel of 'BBCAL85303' has an absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the pedicel of 'KLECA16006' has a weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The flowers of 'BBCAL85303' are larger than those of both reference varieties. The yellow area at the transition to the corolla tube for 'BBCAL85303' is medium sized and star shaped whereas that of both reference varieties range from small to medium sized and are rounded. The inner side of the corolla lobe of 'BBCAL85303' has a large star-shaped yellow marking whereas both reference varieties have no marking. The secondary colour on the inner side of the corolla lobes of 'BBCAL85303' is a white medium to broad area along the fused parts and the margin, whereas the secondary colour on the corolla lobes of 'KLECA16006' is a white narrow area along the fused parts and the secondary colour for 'USCALCHSTM' is a yellow green to light yellow medium sized area along the fused parts and the margin of the corolla lobes.

COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): when newly opened mainly purple (dark than RHS N74A), when fully opened mainly purple (closest to RHS N74A) with a white (RHS NN155D) medium to broad area along fused parts and margin, when aged purple (RHS N74A), medium sized star-shaped yellow (RHS 4A-B) area at transition to corolla tube, rounded or truncate apex
COROLLA TUBE (INNER SIDE): yellow (RHS 9A), large star-shaped yellow marking at transition to corolla, weak conspicuousness of veins

Origin & Breeding History: 'BBCAL85303' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder Mr. Brent Barnes at Plant 21 LLC in Bonsall, California, USA. The cross was made on October 28, 2015 between the proprietary seedling designated 15C644-01, as the female parent, and 'USCAL91001', as the male parent. The new variety was selected on June 23, 2016 as a unique single seedling from the cross. Selection was based on garden performance, growth habit, branching characteristics and flowering characteristics; including colour and colour pattern. Asexual reproduction of 'BBCAL85303' was first conducted by vegetative tip cuttings on June 25, 2016 in Bonsall, California, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'BBCAL85303' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2019 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm diameter hanging baskets on May 6, 2019. Each basket contained 4 cuttings with a total of 5 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 19, 2019. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
