Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'USCALCHSTM' (Superbells Holy Moly!) and 'BBCAL85303' (Superbells Holy Cow!)

Summary: The flower of 'BBCAL85805' is wider than that of 'USCALCHSTM'. The transition to the corolla tube on the inner side of the corolla of 'BBCAL85805' is dark violet whereas that of both reference varieties is yellow. When newly and fully opened, the inner side of the corolla of 'BBCAL85805' is mainly dark violet whereas that of both reference varieties is purple. When aged, the inner side of the corolla of 'BBCAL85805' is blue violet whereas that of 'USCALCHSTM' is blue pink and that of 'BBCAL85303' is purple.

PLANT: semi-upright growth habit

LEAF BLADE: obtuse to rounded apex, no variegation, upper side medium green

PEDICEL: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration
FLOWER: single type
COROLLA: medium degree of lobing, weak conspicuousness of veins
COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): when newly opened mainly dark violet (darker than RHS 83A), when fully opened mainly dark violet (RHS 83A-B) with a white (RHS NN155C) medium to broad area along fused parts, when aged mainly blue violet (RHS 83D, N87B-D), small dark violet (RHS N79A) rounded area at transition to corolla tube, truncate apex
COROLLA TUBE (INNER SIDE): yellow (RHS 8A, 9A), very large star-shaped yellow marking at transition to corolla, weak conspicuousness of veins

Origin & Breeding History: 'BBCAL85805' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder Mr. Brent Barnes at Plant 21 LLC in Bonsall, California, USA. The cross was made on October 15, 2015 between the proprietary seedling designated '15CB414-01', as the female parent, and the proprietary seedling designated '15C692-05', as the male parent. The new variety was selected on June 23, 2016 as a unique single seedling from the cross. Selection was based on garden performance, growth habit, branching characteristics and flowering characteristics; including colour and colour pattern. Asexual reproduction of 'BBCAL85805' was first conducted by vegetative tip cuttings on June 25, 2016 in Bonsall, California, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'BBCAL85805' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2019 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm diameter hanging baskets on May 6, 2019. Each basket contained 4 cuttings with a total of 5 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 19, 2019. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
