Summary: The transition to the corolla tube on the inner side of the corolla of 'BBCAL81801' is black and star-shaped whereas that of 'USCAL08501' is brown purple and rounded. When fully opened, the inner side of the corolla of 'BBCAL81801' is mainly purple whereas that of 'USCAL08501' is mainly dark purple red to red. The inner side of the corolla tube of 'BBCAL81801' is yellow whereas that of 'USCAL08501' is yellow orange.

LEAF BLADE: narrow acute to obtuse apex, no variegation, upper side medium to dark green
PEDICEL: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration
FLOWER: single type
COROLLA: medium degree of lobing, conspicuousness of veins ranging from weak to medium
COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): when newly opened purple (pinker than RHS N74A) with a black (RHS 202A) eye, when fully opened purple (RHS N74A-B), when aged mainly purple (lighter than RHS N74B), large to very large black (RHS 202A) star-shaped area at transition to corolla tube, truncate to weakly emarginate apex
COROLLA TUBE (INNER SIDE): yellow (RHS 5A-B), absent or very small marking at transition to corolla, weak conspicuousness of veins
Origin & Breeding History: 'BBCAL81801' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder Mr. Brent Barnes at Plant 21 LLC in Bonsall, California, USA. The cross was made on August 27, 2015 between 'JGCAL09404', as the female parent, and 'Superbells Blackberry Punch', as the male parent. The new variety was selected on May 17, 2016 as a unique single seedling from the cross. Selection was based on garden performance, growth habit, branching characteristics and flowering characteristics; including colour and colour pattern. Asexual reproduction of 'BBCAL81801' was first conducted by vegetative tip cuttings on May 17, 2016 in Bonsall, California, USA.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'BBCAL81801' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2019 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm diameter hanging baskets on May 6, 2019. Each basket contained 4 cuttings with a total of 5 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 19, 2019. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
