Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'HULA Orange' and 'Balcaboriss' (Cabaret Coral Kiss)

Summary: The plants of 'BBCAL82201' are larger than those of both reference varieties. The apex of the leaf blade of 'BBCAL82201' is obtuse to rounded whereas that of 'HULA Orange' is narrow acute. The pedicel of 'BBCAL82201' is longer than those of both reference varieties. The transition to the corolla tube on the inner side of the corolla of 'BBCAL82201' is brown purple whereas the transition to the corolla tube of both reference varieties is dark purple red. When newly opened, the inner side of the corolla of 'BBCAL82201' is orange red whereas the corolla of 'HULA Orange' is orange and the corolla of 'Balcaboriss' is orange pink. When fully opened, the inner side of the corolla of 'BBCAL82201' is orange red whereas that of 'HULA Orange' is orange and that of 'Balcaboriss' is orange pink to light red pink.

PLANT: semi-upright to spreading growth habit

LEAF BLADE: obtuse to rounded apex, no variegation, upper side medium to dark green

PEDICEL: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration
FLOWER: single type
COROLLA: weak to medium degree of lobing, medium conspicuousness of veins
COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): when newly opened mainly orange red (RHS 30A-B), when fully opened orange red (RHS N25A), when aged mainly orange to yellow orange (RHS 26B, 20A), large brown purple (closest to RHS 187A) rounded area at transition to corolla tube, rounded and truncate apex
COROLLA TUBE (INNER SIDE): yellow (RHS 9A), absent or very small marking at transition to corolla, weak to medium conspicuousness of veins

Origin & Breeding History: 'BBCAL82201' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder Mr. Brent Barnes at Plant 21 LLC in Bonsall, California, USA. The cross was made on August 26, 2015 between the variety 'Aloha Hula Godiva', as the female parent, and the proprietary seedling designated '14CG043-02', as the male parent. The new variety was selected on May 17, 2016 as a unique single seedling from the cross. Selection was based on garden performance, growth habit, branching characteristics and flowering characteristics; including colour and colour pattern. Asexual reproduction of 'BBCAL82201' was first conducted by vegetative tip cuttings on May 17, 2016 in Bonsall, California, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'BBCAL82201' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2019 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm diameter hanging baskets on May 6, 2019. Each basket contained 4 cuttings with a total of 5 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 27, 2019. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
