Variety used for comparison: 'KLECA15290' (Minifamous Neo Double Lemon)

Summary: The pedicel of 'USCAL51505' is shorter than that of 'KLECA15290'. The corolla of 'USCAL51505' has a very weak to weak degree of lobing whereas the corolla of 'KLECA15290' has a medium degree of lobing. When fully opened, the inner side of the corolla of 'USCAL51505' is lighter yellow than that of 'KLECA15290'. The corolla lobe of 'USCAL51505' has a truncate apex whereas the corolla lobe of 'KLECA15290' has a rounded apex.

Description:

PLANT: semi-upright to spreading growth habit

LEAF BLADE: obtuse apex, no variegation, upper side medium green

PEDICEL: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration
FLOWER: double type
COROLLA: absent or very weak to weak lobing, weak conspicuousness of veins
COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): when newly opened mainly light yellow (RHS 10C), when fully opened mainly light yellow (RHS 10D and lighter toward center), when aged mainly light yellow orange (RHS 11D), truncate apex

Origin & Breeding History: 'USCAL51505' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder Mr. Ushio Sakazaki in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan. The cross was made on May 26, 2012 between the proprietary seedling designated 'CJ08-07', as the female parent, and the proprietary seedling designated 'CC016-01', as the male parent. The new variety was selected on June 5, 2013 as a unique single seedling from the cross. Selection was based on growth habit, branching characteristics, double flower type and flower colour. Asexual reproduction of 'USCAL51505' was first conducted by vegetative tip cuttings on June 6, 2013 in Bonsall, California, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'USCAL51505' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2019 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm diameter hanging baskets on May 6, 2019. Each basket contained 4 cuttings with a total of 5 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 27, 2019. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
