Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'BBCAL91303' (Superbells Honeyberry)

Summary: The plants and pedicels of 'BBCAL99001' are shorter than those of 'BBCAL91303'. The flowers of 'BBCAL99001' are smaller than those of 'BBCAL91303'. On the inner side of the corolla lobe of 'BBCAL99001', the area of colour at the transition to the corolla tube is medium to large whereas that of 'BBCAL91303' is small to medium sized. When fully opened, the inner side of the corolla lobe of 'BBCAL99001' is medium purple red whereas that of 'BBCAL91303' is medium blue pink with medium purple red along the margin.

Description:

PLANT: semi-upright growth habit

LEAF BLADE: broad acute apex, no variegation, medium green on upper side

FLOWER: single type, weak to medium degree of lobing
COROLLA LOBE: medium to strong conspicuousness of veins, rounded to truncate apex
COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): when newly and fully opened medium purple red (RHS 58B), when aged pink (RHS 52C), medium to large rounded area of medium yellow (RHS 12A) at transition to corolla tube, no marking at transition to corolla tube
COROLLA TUBE (INNER SIDE): dark yellow (RHS 14A), absent or very weak conspicuousness of veins

Origin & Breeding History: 'BBCAL99001' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder, Brent D. Barnes in Bonsall, California, USA on September 25, 2017. The cross was conducted between the female parent, proprietary seedling designated '17CB192-01', and the male parent, a proprietary seedling designated '17CB203-01'. The new variety was selected as a single seedling from the resulting progeny on June 15, 2018 based on its plant growth habit, flowering time, flower colour and pattern and garden performance. Asexual propagation of 'BBCAL99001' was first conducted by vegetative tip cuttings on June 19, 2018 in Bonsall, California, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'BBCAL99001' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2021 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm diameter hanging baskets on April 26, 2021. Each basket contained 4 cuttings with a total of 5 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of 10 plants, on June 10, 2021. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on paired Student's T-tests.
