Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Balcaborim' (Cabaret Orange)

Summary: The corolla of ‘CBRZ0048' has a strong degree of lobing whereas that of ‘Balcaborim' has a medium degree of lobing. The inner side of the corolla lobe of ‘CBRZ0048' is a darker dark red at the transition to the corolla tube than that of ‘Balcaborim'. When fully opened, the inner side of the corolla lobe of ‘CBRZ0048' is orange red to light red whereas that of ‘Balcaborim' is medium orange to medium yellow orange. When aged, the inner side of the corolla lobe of ‘CBRZ0048' is medium orange whereas that of ‘Balcaborim' is dark yellow to light orange.

COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): medium red (RHS 44A) when newly opened, orange red (RHS 32A) to light red (RHS 33A) when fully opened, medium orange (RHS 30D and 29A) when aged, medium sized rounded area of dark red (darker than RHS N45A) at transition to corolla tube, absent marking at transition to corolla tube
COROLLA TUBE (INNER SIDE): medium yellow (RHS 7B and 6B), weak conspicuousness of veins

Origin & Breeding History: ‘CBRZ0048' originated from a controlled cross between the female parent, a proprietary seedling designated ‘CALCC4294-1V', and the male parent, a proprietary seedling designated ‘CALCC4308-8V' conducted in Gilroy, California, USA on July 2, 2018. The new variety ‘CBRZ0048' was selected on June 18, 2019 based on plant habit, flower size, flower colour and flower eye colour.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for ‘CBRZ0048' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2025 at Bioflora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm hanging baskets on April 22, 2025. Each basket contained 4 cuttings with a total of 5 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, on June 3, 2025. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
