Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Balcabmiss' (Cabaret Midnight Kiss) and 'CBRZ0051' (Callie Strawberry Spark)

Summary: The leaf of ‘CBRZ0049' is longer than that of ‘CBRZ0051'. The flower of ‘CBRZ0049' is wider than that of ‘Balcabmiss'. When newly opened, the inner side of the corolla lobe of ‘CBRZ0049' is light violet whereas that of ‘Balcabmiss' is medium violet and that of ‘CBRZ0051' is a slightly lighter light violet. When fully opened, the inner side of the corolla lobe of ‘CBRZ0049' is light violet with dark violet and medium violet at the transition to the corolla tube whereas that of ‘Balcabmiss' is medium violet with dark violet at the transition to the corolla tube and that of ‘CBRZ0051' is a slightly different light violet with medium purple at the transition to the corolla tube. When aged, the inner side of the corolla lobe of ‘CBRZ0049' is light violet whereas that of ‘Balcabmiss' is medium blue violet and that of ‘CBRZ0051' is light violet to light blue pink.

COROLLA LOBE: truncate apex
COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): light violet (RHS 76A) when newly opened, mainly light violet (RHS 76B) when fully opened, light violet (lighter than RHS 84D) when aged, medium yellow (RHS 7C) secondary colour with a narrow distribution along the fused parts of the corolla lobe, medium to large rounded and star shaped area of dark violet (closest to N92A) and medium violet (RHS N81A) at transition to corolla tube, very large yellow marking at transition to corolla tube, absent or weak colour change during growing season
COROLLA TUBE (INNER SIDE): medium yellow (RHS 6C), weak conspicuousness of veins

Origin & Breeding History: ‘CBRZ0049' originated from a controlled cross between the female parent, a proprietary seedling designated ‘CALCB4233-8V', and the male parent, a proprietary seedling designated ‘CAL4134-13V' conducted in Gilroy, California, USA on January 17, 2018. The new variety ‘CBRZ0049' was selected on October 1, 2018 based on plant habit, flower size, flower colour and flower pattern.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for ‘CBRZ0049' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2025 at Bioflora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm hanging baskets on April 22, 2025. Each basket contained 4 cuttings with a total of 5 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, on June 2, 2025. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
