Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Balcabooni' (Cabaret Good Night Kiss) and 'CBRZ0049' (Callie Blueberry Spark)

Summary: The leaf of ‘CBRZ0051' is shorter than that of both reference varieties. The flower of ‘CBRZ0051' is wider than that of ‘Balcabooni'. When newly opened, the inner side of the corolla lobe of ‘CBRZ0051' is light violet whereas that of ‘Balcabooni' is medium purple and that of ‘CBRZ0049' is a slightly darker light violet. When fully opened, the inner side of the corolla lobe of ‘CBRZ0051' is light violet with medium purple at the transition to the corolla tube whereas that of ‘Balcabooni' is medium purple with dark purple, medium violet and black at the transition to the corolla tube and that of ‘CBRZ0049' is a slightly different light violet with dark violet and medium violet at the transition to the corolla tube. When aged, the inner side of the corolla lobe of ‘CBRZ0051' is light violet to light blue pink whereas that of ‘Balcabooni' is medium purple and that of ‘CBRZ0049' is light violet.

COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): light violet (closest to RHS 75B) when newly opened, mainly light violet (lighter than RHS 75B) when fully opened, light violet to light blue pink (RHS 76C-D) when aged, medium yellow (RHS 7C) secondary colour with a narrow distribution along the fused parts of the corolla lobe, medium to large rounded and star shaped area of medium purple (redder than RHS NN78A) at transition to corolla tube, very large yellow marking at transition to corolla tube, absent or weak colour change during growing season
COROLLA TUBE (INNER SIDE): medium yellow (RHS 6C), weak conspicuousness of veins

Origin & Breeding History: ‘CBRZ0051' originated from a controlled cross between the female parent, a proprietary seedling designated ‘CALCB4233-8V', and the male parent, a proprietary seedling designated ‘CAL4134-13V' conducted in Gilroy, California, USA on January 17, 2018. The new variety ‘CBRZ0051' was selected on October 1, 2018 based on plant habit, flower size, flower colour and flower pattern.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for ‘CBRZ0051' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2025 at Bioflora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm hanging baskets on April 22, 2025. Each basket contained 4 cuttings with a total of 5 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, on June 2, 2025. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
