Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'USCAL81302' (Superbells Doublette Love Swept) and 'KLECA19067' (MiniFamous Neo Double Orangetastic)

Summary: The plants and shoots of ‘WNCALSBDBLRS24' are shorter than those of both reference varieties. The flowers of ‘WNCALSBDBLRS24' are narrower than those of ‘KLECA19067'. The flowers of ‘WNCALSBDBLRS24' have a strong degree of lobing whereas those of ‘USCAL81302' have a medium degree of lobing and those of ‘KLECA19067' have a weak degree of lobing. When fully opened, the inner side of the corolla lobe of ‘WNCALSBDBLRS24' is dark red with a very narrow medium yellow margin on the lobes and that of ‘USCAL81302' is medium purple with a very narrow white margin on the lobes and that of ‘KLECA19067' is dark red with a broad medium yellow margin on the lobes.

Description:

PLANT: semi-upright growth habit

LEAF BLADE: acute to obtuse apex, no variegation, medium green upper side

FLOWER: double type
COROLLA: strong degree of lobing, weak conspicuousness of veins
COROLLA LOBE: truncate apex
COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): dark red (RHS N45B) when newly opened, mainly dark red (RHS N45B to 46B) when fully opened, red pink (closest to RHS 45D) when aged, medium yellow (closest to RHS 6A) secondary colour with a narrow distribution at margin of corolla lobes, absent or weak colour change during growing season

Origin & Breeding History: ‘WNCALSBDBLRS24' originated from a controlled cross between the female parent, a proprietary seedling designated ‘16CB849-05', and the male parent, a proprietary seedling designated ‘16CU751-02' conducted in Bonsall, California, USA on September 26, 2018. The new variety ‘WNCALSBDBLRS24' was selected on August 26, 2019 based on plant vigour, branching density, double type flowers, flower colour, time of flowering and frequency of flowering. Asexual reproduction by cuttings was initiated in Bonsall, California, USA on August 26, 2019.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for ‘WNCALSBDBLRS24' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2025 at Bioflora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm hanging baskets on April 14, 2025. Each basket contained 4 cuttings with a total of 5 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, on May 28, 2025. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
