Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Unique Hot Pink' and 'Colibri Pink Flamingo'

Summary: The plants of ‘WNCALSBPK24' are taller than those of both reference varieties. The leaves of ‘WNCALSBPK24' are smaller than those of both reference varieties. The flowers of ‘WNCALSBPK24' are narrower than those of both reference varieties. At the transition to the corolla tube, the inner side of the corolla lobe of ‘WNCALSBPK24' has an absent or very small to small yellow marking whereas that of ‘Unique Hot Pink' has a medium to large white marking.

Description:

PLANT: semi-upright growth habit

LEAF BLADE: acute blunted apex, no variegation, medium green upper side

PEDICEL: absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration
FLOWER: single type
COROLLA: medium degree of lobing, absent or very weak conspicuousness of veins
COROLLA LOBE: truncate apex
COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): dark blue pink (RHS 73A) when newly and fully opened, medium blue pink (RHS N66D) when aged, small rounded to partially star-shaped area of medium purple (RHS N74B) at transition to corolla tube, absent or very small to small yellow marking at transition to corolla tube, absent or weak colour change during growing season
COROLLA TUBE (INNER SIDE): medium yellow (RHS 7A), absent or very weak conspicuousness of veins

Origin & Breeding History: ‘WNCALSBPK24' originated from a controlled cross between the female parent, a proprietary seedling designated ‘18CB273-01', and the male parent variety ‘Duecalhulblu', conducted in Bonsall, California, USA on September 25, 2019. The new variety ‘WNCALSBPK24' was selected on June 1, 2020 based on flower characteristics and performance in containers and gardens. Asexual reproduction by cuttings was initiated on June 3, 2020.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for ‘WNCALSBPK24' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2024 at Bioflora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm hanging baskets on April 25, 2024. Each basket contained 4 cuttings with a total of 5 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, on May 29, 2024. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
