Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'KLECA17399' (MiniFamous Neo Dark Blue), 'Lia Blue' and 'Unique Blue'

Summary: The leaves of ‘WNCALSBBL24' are larger than those of all of the reference varieties. The veins on the corolla of ‘WNCALSBBL24' have weak to medium conspicuousness whereas those of ‘KLECA17399' have strong conspicuousness and those of both ‘Lia Blue' and ‘Unique Blue' have absent or very weak conspicuousness. At the transition to the corolla tube, the inner side of the corolla lobe of ‘WNCALSBBL24' is dark violet whereas that of ‘KLECA17339' and ‘Unique Blue' are dark purple and that of ‘Lia Blue' is light violet.

PLANT: semi-upright to spreading growth habit

LEAF BLADE: obtuse apex, no variegation, medium green upper side

FLOWER: single type
COROLLA: medium degree of lobing, weak to medium conspicuousness of veins
COROLLA LOBE: emarginate apex
COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): medium violet (closest to N82A) when fully opened, dark violet (closest to 83A) when newly opened, medium blue violet (RHS N82B) when aged, absent or very small partially rounded area of dark violet (RHS 79A) at transition to corolla tube, absent or very small marking at transition to corolla tube, absent or weak colour change during growing season
COROLLA TUBE (INNER SIDE): dark violet (RHS79A) along top, medium yellow (RHS 7A) along bottom, weak to medium conspicuousness of veins

Origin & Breeding History: ‘WNCALSBBL24' originated from a controlled cross between the female parent, a proprietary seedling designated ‘19CJ253', and the male parent, a proprietary seedling designated ‘16C834-03' conducted in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan on May 18, 2019. The new variety ‘WNCALSBBL24' was selected in Bonsall, California, USA on June 1, 2020 based on plant habit, plant vigour, branching density, time of flowering and frequency of flowering. Asexual reproduction by cuttings was initiated in Bonsall, California, USA on June 3, 2020.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for ‘WNCALSBBL24' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2024 at Bioflora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm hanging baskets on April 25, 2024. Each basket contained 4 cuttings with a total of 5 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, on May 28, 2024. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
