Summary: The plants of ‘WNCALSBDBLWH24' are shorter than those of both reference varieties. The shoots of ‘WNCALSBDBLWH24' are shorter than those of ‘KLECA22893'. The leaves of ‘WNCALSBDBLWH24' are smaller than those of both reference varieties. The plants of ‘WNCALSBDBLWH24' have many flowers whereas those of ‘KLECA22893' have a medium number and those of ‘KLECA21566' have few.
Description:
PLANT: upright to semi-upright growth habit
LEAF BLADE: acute blunted apex, no variegation, medium green upper side
PEDICEL: absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration
FLOWER: double type, many
COROLLA: strong lobing, absent or very weak conspicuousness of veins
COROLLA LOBE: truncate to emarginate apex
COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): white (closest to RHS NN155D) when newly opened, fully opened and aged; absent or weak colour change during growing season
Origin & Breeding History: ‘WNCALSBDBLWH24' originated from a controlled cross between the female parent variety ‘KLECA22893' and the male parent variety ‘Million Bells Gran White' conducted in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan on May 25, 2018. The new variety ‘WNCALSBDBLWH24' was selected in Bonsall, California, USA on July 2, 2019 based on plant habit, double type flowers, branching density, time of flowering and frequency of flowering. Asexual reproduction by cuttings was initiated in Bonsall, California, USA on July 8, 2019.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for ‘WNCALSBDBLWH24' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2024 at Bioflora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 30 cm hanging baskets on April 25, 2024. Each basket contained 4 cuttings with a total of 5 baskets per variety. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, on May 29, 2024. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
